New Zealand Radio

Not sure how they are all going to fit…perhaps some co-hosts in drive. Smalley and Garner together maybe? And what of Lloyd Burr?

Gosh that Brin Rudkin seems to announce things before his company does lol.

From a post a few weeks ago, Rachel Smalley has already been making daily appearances on Magic Talk as the business correspondent. Perhaps she might host a business show? Early Edition type format at 5am again?

I could see Duncan hosting Afternoons.

Lloyd talked to Rachel this afternoon about her joining the station next year before their business piece.

I’m not too sure what role you’re going to have but it’s great that you’re going to be on board and I’ll be able to use you some more hopefully.
Rachel: Fun being part of a station build … possibly a little bit riskier, so Dallas told us we could be.

She mentioned in the media release as well “I’ve got licence to take a few risks”

My guess…

He was excited to be joining the MediaWorks talk radio operation, Garner said. It had a “formidable” line-up, and there were some more surprise announcements to come.

“MediaWorks has done this before. They know journalism and they know talk radio,” Garner said.

“The company was signalling it was serious in the talk space. They want to take on (Newstalk) ZB at their own game.”

The role of director of news & talk Dallas Gurney in setting up the operation had given him confidence MediaWorks was “seriously in the game”, Garner said.

I don’t know where Rachel fits into the picture and wonder what “surprise” announcements are yet to come - but I’m gonna say…

5am with (yet to be named)
Tova O’Brien Breakfast
Mornings with (yet to be named)
Afternoons with Duncan Garner
Lloyd Burr Drive
Nights with (yet to be named)
Overnights with (yet to be named)

You don’t think Danny will get a show?

I know people don’t like the word ‘woke’ but I can’t think of any other word to describe him lol. Was he as woke on ZB as he is nowadays ?

It’s like how I’d imagine John Campbell doing talkback

Nope lol

Pretty good source tells me Mediaworks new talk station will be “TodayFM”

A bit of an odd name for talkback

For Auckland and Christchurch listeners, MediaWorks’ new talk radio brand would be known as “Today AM” due to their respective AM frequencies (702AM and 738AM).

You would think they would just move frequencies

You mean the old RadioLIVE FM frequencies (100.6FM in Auckland, 99.3FM in Christchurch)? And what about Rodney (92.9FM), Taupo (99.2FM) and Taranaki (89.2FM)?

At present, Magic - the greatest music of the 50s, 60s & 70s - broadcasts on those frequencies (except Rodney where 92.9FM is home to The Sound). Before then, they were once the home of RadioLIVE.

In Auckland 102.2 is Decommissioned. Just 2 up from Magic music and just on top of RNZ

@Michael_Eccles @OnAir @nztv The 102FM national network, actually set aside more than 20 years ago for a youth-oriented radio station but only briefly used for that purpose, would play host to RNZ’s proposed youth radio service but the Broadcasting Minister, Kris Faafoi, confirmed that, due to Covid-19, its plans were ‘put to one side’ and RNZ itself would focus on its core business of news and current affairs.

I don’t think MediaWorks will acquire the 102FM frequencies from the Government and use them for its new talk radio brand.

In fact, Kiwi FM, which was owned by MediaWorks, used to broadcast on 102FM in the three main centres: Auckland (102.2FM), Wellington (102.1FM) and Christchurch (102.5FM). These were given back to the Government when the Kiwi FM network ceased in 2015.

Gee a 20 year wait for a youth network? Those youth are now middle aged

Intriguing. I’d heard RadioLIVE was on the comeback trail, no joke!

Interesting. I’m predicting the name is an acronym.

Today FM was in Wairarapa in 1991, owned and operated by one Paul Henry. Hilary Barry was the local newsreader. Think there was a Today FM in Akl for a time, not sure. Agree, a bit of a odd name for a talkback station
