He’s coming back?!
Oops! Force of habit haha. Have edited.
Seems pretty likely eh. I’m liking Steph on Breakfast, she keeps it upbeat… nice change.
I agree, Steph is great!
From what we were speculating on here: MW is to end its news arrangement with Newshub from early December.
MediaWorks today announced that it will end its agreement with both Newshub and The AM Show, and that it will launch its own news service early next year. At the same time, Magic Talk will finally get its own breakfast show with Ryan Bridge at the helm.
The announcement comes after MediaWorks announced Dallas Gurney has joined the company as its new director of News and Talk.
@Korero As I said before, MediaWorks will end its agreement with both Newshub and The AM Show and will launch its own news service early next year. In due course, MediaWorks will announce a pool of newsreaders, reporters and editors so, as mentioned by Brin Rudkin (who has worked at MediaWorks in recent times), keep an eye on the MediaWorks Careers website for more details.
Since it’s set to end in early December, and the news service most likely wouldn’t be ready until next year, it seems likely that it’ll take either RNZ’s or NZME’s news service in the meantime.
@LiamP I personally think MediaWorks will temporarily take RNZ’s news service instead of NZME’s.
Wow! Without access to MediaWorks’ radio stations, Newshub can no longer claim it is New Zealand’s #1 news source. It was a stretch to begin with but they lose a huge chuck of audience because of this.
Don’t think this is right. He’s doing the AM Show.
It’s an interesting move - whatever the Newshub licence fee was, they clearly are taking the station in a different direction or it was too high asking price.
I’m guessing Garner has signed on to do Breakfast. Probably wishes he didn’t say he was leaving AM Show due to the brutal hours.
Will be interesting to see what the news brand will be called & whether Magic Talk will be rebranded the same. Ie how they were going to rebrand RadioLive as Newshub Radio before the sale of MW TV
And jobs are up.
Really hoping current Newshub radio staff are snapped up first and foremost. And this isn’t an excuse to cut wages/do it cheaper.
The most interesting role to keep an eye on is who will be appointed Political Editor. That will really set the tone for the news/talk brand.
But no support from a gallery team. Barebones.
Lloyd Burr? He’s already on air and it kinda makes sense given he came back from the UK without keeping his job at Disco (which might indicate how long MW’s divorce from Newshub had been in the works).
MW would forge ahead and produce a dodgy news service before paying NZME for news, surely!
In saying that, I wouldn’t discount them producing a decent-enough news service from December - even if they’re using most of their copy from press releases &c.
Yes a month isn’t long, but they’ve got a decent pool of talent to draw from, with experience, and they’ve got the facilities, she’ll be right.
I think it’s fair to say MW always planned to end the relationship with Newshub and signed a one-year agreement to give them time to plan and prepare, which included signing Dallas Gurney onboard. Newshub Radio staff should have been worried as soon as Discovery took over because Discovery is not in the business of making radio content.
The position description says there will also be political reporters and a gallery team.
“Lead the Gallery team, ensuring they are performing at their best and have the
required resources, training and support to do their job.”
Maybe Garner will be political editor. In an interview with Max Whitehead, at one point he mentioned how hard it was getting a property valuation in covid times. Would make sense if he’s moving back to Wellington for pol ed role.
“I’ve signed something, it’s exciting and it’s a little bit new for me, not overly new, but a little bit new”
