New Zealand Election 2020 - Media coverage

They crossed earlier to Kieran McAnulty (Labour) in the Wairarapa electorate. Probably one of the most enjoyable interviews of the evening.

Great coverage from both networks tonight but Newshub had the edge I thought. Looked like they had been working on tonight for months (the graphics were unusually good for Three), lots of different voices on their panel. Whereas TVNZ kept the same 4 guests on all night and the graphics (unusually) ugly right down to the 1 News stickers on the laptops… :face_vomiting:

Is Australian TV covering this as well with partner NZ channels?

Anyone think and vote
Which graphics are better?

That is it from 1 News and Newshub tonight.

Maybe it was the result and lack of a “cliffhanger” but I thought that both networks were resoundingly flat tonight.

I stayed with 1 probably a bit longer on average than 3 and it felt like John Campbell was just waffling most of the time rather than keeping it pacy.
Three would have been better with a bit more Paddy Gower involvement. You get the bloke to steer your election debate and coverage then essentially have him number crunching on the night (a big job sure, but felt he could have offered more). Not a Garner fan though so could be biased there

It’s hard as well, given a lot of the safe blue seats went red but I wanted a bit more analysis than just surprise or wow at the fact Ilam and Rangiora, Hamilton East went red.

Three had a more interesting panel dynamic going on then TVNZ 1. It really felt stale sometimes I just urned to turn back to Three sometimes.

I really think Three went all out and did a better job overall with its presentation, you always had a better idea what was going on at the time even though it looked cluttered on screen. They really stepped up especially with their AR graphics.

TVNZ 1 had clean and impressive graphics but unless you were on at the right time when they were talking about it you never got a full overview of the electorates.

I preferred NewsHub’s coverage to 1 NEWS NZ’s coverage. Watched both to compare the difference

Exactly. I watched 3 most of the night, every time I switched over, JC was on a waffle, so I never saw their graphics. Then again, I had the results on a second screen next to the TV, so I could see the telemetry I wanted, as I wanted it, so that wasn’t a major for me. Maori TV’s seemed on par with TVNZ1, as far as talking heads was concerned, so I pretty much stuck with the hub of news.

They need to do what ITV do in the UK, and cover the entire back of the device, so it looks uniform. Bumper stickers don’t cut it!

You mean, Rangitata, and that was gush-worthy. That used to be my electorate once upon a time, and it is truly astounding that it’s gone red. The only thing red in those parts were Farmall tractors!

Yeah sorry, autocorrect!
And indeed, having spent a bit of time there over the years I’m still trying to process it going red!

Was quite surprised with Rangitatas result too. Even my Waitaki labour electorate was edging pretty close to national with their un heard of till now mp.

Regards to results on screen only disappointing thing about 1 was they didn’t flick through all electorates like Newshub did. Their scrolling ticker seemed pointless tbh. Didn’t even see one mention of my electorate on either channels and the Waitaki is a fairly big on too.

Just finished listening to RNZ MediaWatch’s take, and it seems whatever coverage anyone started with, they pretty much stuck to.

Had no idea RNZ or Stuff were dong video coverage of it… any caps, anyone?

Here is a quick highlight video of the night from RNZ. Shows a bit of the graphics
