Neighbours

Seems that Fremantle is trying to de-escalate the controversy.

Seems that Fremantle is trying to escalate the controversy if you ask me.

No chance of any allegations from Home & Away’s set, given Summer Bay’s ongoing White Australia Policy.

I shouldn’t be so glib. The Neighbours situation is a real shame, not only for the actors involved, but Neighbours has taken some big steps forward (at least for an Australian drama) in terms of on-screen diversity in recent years. And, it’s really sad to hear that not everyone behind the scenes appears to have been onboard with that and haven’t been behaving appropriately.

In a follow-up post on Instagram today, Clanton showed abusive comments she had received since going public with her concerns.

“What a token career she had — she can kiss goodbye,” said one post.

Another post said “never hire brown people”.

A third comment called Clanton a “whiner”.

crisis management 101 - a single spokesperson on behalf of the organisation. The worst thing you can do is have everyone throwing their two cents in.

Yeah thats what I was thinking. Seems they are going about it the wrong way to me.

It may seem like censorship but there needs to be an investigation into the alligations. If this turns out to be true (I cant prove it to be true or not) then those who are responible for the alleged racisim should be disciplined.

CNN has picked up the story .

Oh, dear. That is not a good look.

Saskia Hampele, who played Georgia Brooks, has said that she witnessed a lot of sexism during her time on the show.

Shareena Clanton has now taken a swipe at The Morning Show entertainment reporter Peter Ford, accusing him of suggesting that her claims are debatable and that she should have offered more context to them.

Ford has now locked his Twitter account so only his followers can see his tweets, no doubt because of this.

Clanton is now engaging with lawyers, and speaking to the Human Rights Commissioner about misconduct on Neighbours.

At first, I applauded Shareena for having the courage to come out with these claims. But now, I’m starting to think that she’s taking it too far. As a commentator, Peter Ford is allowed to openly discuss his views on the situation.

This whole situation is really messy, but surely if what Peter Ford said was true then that should’ve been mentioned. Initially I assumed someone was using the ‘n’ word in their day to day speech, not reciting or singing lyrics from a rap song.

I think you have to be mindful of what you say around others. For example I tend to have a bit of a potty mouth, but I won’t swear when I’m around older people who may not appreciate the language. It’s about showing them respect.

I was really looking forward to this storyline and I’m disappointed how it’s all turned out.

How is she “taking it too far?”

Firstly, I think it was unfair for her to call out Peter Ford when he was just asking a genuine question about the context of the claims. When it’s been alleged that a word so serious as the n-word has been used, then questions like those should be allowed to be asked.

Also, I don’t think Shareena is helping her case by going on about it on social media every day. If her allegations are indeed proven to be true, then Neighbours should be held to shame and those responsible should be disciplined accordingly.

Some of her claims initially sounded quite strange to me. The slave driver comment was probably said with no intention of upsetting her.

What is your personal experience or lived experience of racism or other discrimination?

So in other words you want someone to be quiet when they experience racism ? It’s our moral duty as humans to encourage people to work together to tackle racism.

Can you explain why she should be silenced? Her platform to bring it to attention is her business, not yours.

How does this affect you? She’s standing up against racism and she is using her platform to do it . Some people don’t like that and want to silence her. Shameful.

This is why education is important how that term can be used as derogatory .

Hell no. When it happens in the workplace, go to your boss/supervisor/HR or whatever to report what’s happened. I just don’t think her putting it on social media helps her, because employers will be reluctant to hire her in the future, and then she’s subject to “attention seeker” and “whiner” comments from those terrible few out there.

I know where the term slave driver comes from. The term can be used in that derogatory sense, however her original claim was:

A senior staff member openly laughed whilst using the term “slave driver” in reference to him “working hard”.

Do you really think the situation in which slave driver was used here was used on purpose to upset Shareena?

I will never work for you, using someone’s past experience of racism to refute hiring them is the very definition of discrimination. In my opinion.

Just to clarify - the line about future employers being reluctant to hire her never came from my mouth, this is what Peter Ford said on 3AW or The Morning Show (I can’t remember which one).

What Peter meant when he made those comments was that employers view her as being “difficult to work with” if she’s going to tarnish the reputation of a show she appears on (even though it is Neighbours’ fault for letting this go on behind the scenes and not helping Shareena).
