NBN (The other one)

Iam on fttp so i can get 1gb/40mb .i got it for my partner so he can stream on twitch. I would Iiked it if nbn made the 1gb residential the same as the 1gb business plan though. (1gb/1gb)

Will never happen - NBN have purposely limited the upload to create a business case for their residential vs business customers (plus limitations in current MTM tech).
An upload speed increase though is definitely needed - 50mbps on the 1000/50 plan is ridiculous - the only reason I’m on that plan is so I have access to the faster upload speed (although the download is definitely awesome).
The only way they’ll upgrade the uploads all-round is by making drastic changes to HFC - and from what I’ve heard their 2025 proposal will either go the way of upgrading it to DOCSIS 4.0 or scrapping it entirely for full fibre.
DOCSIS 4.0 is a big update and requires new modems, less segment splits and deeper fibre, so I’m not sure I can see the value in this.

Would depend if the NBN were going to be willing to do a lot of FTTB deployments. I’m in a building with HFC - can’t imagine it would be a cheap undertaking to swap it all to full fibre - and if they wanted the building to foot the bill, I think they’d just boot everyone over to 5G.

FTTB is only fibre to the basement/comms room of the building. The connection from there to each apartment is over copper wire. It’s essentially FTTN, but the node is in your building, so it does get faster speeds than regular FTTN, but is still limited to 100mbit download.

i know someone who has fttb but its HFC

My area Newtown Toowoomba was originally announced back in May 2021 and the place I live in still only has FTTN, and once again today Newtown was listed again… Lets hope they get their arse into gear this time and actually upgrade this area.
Interesting to note that there is a Telstra Pit on the footpath next door and when i opened it up and sent my telco mate a photo he reckons it is FTTC ready… Likely explains why my 100/40 FTTN connection I don’t go below 105/38 most days

Seven News Melbourne reported tonight that supercharged internet is rolling out across Victoria, promising ten times faster speeds at no extra cost. It’s part of the NBN’s latest expansion to try and catch up with 5G technology.

And 6G will probably jump ahead again in a few years time.
Good news for consumers though.

Hard to believe that speeds will then be 20,000 times faster than what we first had with dial up back in the late 1990s.

NBN Co will introduce a new network termination device (NTD) - or cable modem - for its hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) network later this year, built around a new chipset sourced from Max Linear.

An NBN Co spokesperson told iTnews that the existing chip used in the CM8200 NTDs had been end-of-lifed.It is understood that the new NTD will be available sometime in the third quarter of this calendar year.

The new box will also have the same dimensions as the existing one.

Customers with existing CM8200 NTDs can continue to use them and are unaffected by the move

This is pretty damning.

Telstra has been fairly open in calling out NBN stupidity for some time - it was only a matter of time before they turned their eyes to the satellite service. Covid showed just how pathetic the Sky Muster service is and to NBNco’s credit they’ve said that they’re making changes, but its nearly too late as anyone who wants decent speeds has already jumped to StarLink

the NBN satellite service was always going to be a dud.

Poor choice in Payload, making the service unusable when even heavy cloud comes along.
The problem the NBN have is they cant even sell the satellite as no providers would want to buy a KA only satellite.

(Figured I’d move it to the right thread)

This is because of HFC which is currently capped at a sustained 750mbps with bursts up to 1gbps unlike FTTP which can sustain the full 1gbps.
They use 600 as a baseline safe speed.

Telstra has fully vacated the Cable network now so we should begin to see improvements to HFC over the next few years.
NBN plan on enabling the 250/100 tier on HFC by May 2024 so improvements are already on the way.

Big upgrades coming for NBN:

In terms of speed boosts the 100Mbps plan gets the biggest jump in available speed, lifting to 500Mbps downloads and an increase from 20 to 50Mbps in upload speed. The 250/25 plan will move to 750/50 and the fastest or “Ultrafast” NBN plan will go from being an offer between 500 and 1000Mbps down and 50Mbps up, to 750-1000 down and between 50 and 100Mbps uploads.

Great, meanwhile I’m stuck on a max of 25 down one shit copper that’s unlikely to be converted to fiber before 2027

Oh, is that why the site is so slow sometimes and the poor old hamster has to work so hard!

Do you mind me asking which suburb you’re located in? I assume your location isn’t part of the FTTP upgrade program?

No the hamsters are based in Singapore

East Tamworth - my ISP advises that it’s outside of the area of the suburb that is being designed at the moment - the unofficial (using official data) NBN upgrade map seems to confirm this too

If you enter your address on the official NBN website:

Does it give any indication officially from there?

(From a friend of mine in Broadford VIC - December 2024 is their connection timeframe)

I gave up my NBN connection last year because the best I could get was about 24Mb/s and that was terrible and NBN themselves said I wasn’t going to get much better. Went to Starlink and it’s been great. Once the fibre upgrade is complete I’ll look at NBN again but even though they’ve done lots of work in our suburb (which is in the middle of Devonport so not completely in the sticks) we still have no date given for a timeframe although our old house where we were close to the node and got the 100Mb/s speeds has a timeframe of March 2025.
