I think the final 6pm bulletin next Friday 26th will be the most interesting one to watch.
Theyâll try to paper over their (WINâs) ineptitude.
I still think the people of Newcastle should go and riot at the studios. ![]()
I do think Nine are as much to blame for this as WIN are. But itâs also a sign of the times we live in.
But having said that, apart from Tasmania, no other regional area has had commercial TV weekend news bulletins since 1995. So I think weâve been fortunate to have them for this long.
At least that would be one story WIN could find for a local bulletin
One thing we can watch for impact of this is Nineâs national ratings vs their 5 city rating. Doing math with the 5 city numbers, using an average of the last two weeks of weekday ratings and last 3 Sundays,
| National | 5 City | Remainder | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9NEWS SUNDAY | 1.31m | 946k | 367k |
| SEVEN NEWS â SUN | 1.43m | 921k | 507k |
| 9NEWS (Mon-Thu) | 1.33m | 972k | 355k |
| SEVEN NEWS (Mon-Thu) | 1.51m | 938k | 574k |
With lots of asterisks, the final regional TAM reports in 2024, Seven News would average 375k and Nine would average 250k. Itâs not apples to apples as the systems are different, but the Northern NSW figure was 40% of the total East coast aggregated figure for Nine News (~105k) - as the numbers are higher in the new system, but also it covers a bit more of the country than the old system, Iâd guess NBN News would be getting about 130k of that Nine News figure in regional areas.
My prediction would be, that NNSW falls to a similar pattern to other regional markets, so a slight boost to Seven, and Nine almost in half, with that a mix of viewers switching off entirely and some shift to Seven, especially in their local news markets.
So my guess would be those numbers being sub 300k for Nine outside the 5 cities and 7 weeknights topping 600k. Iâd think itâd be a far greater impact than that on the ad rates WIN could get during â9Newsâ even if it does somewhat hold up.
That said, sucks if Seven are a beneficiary for doing nothing at a time when they are also slashing jobs.
Regional TAM figures referenced
| East Coast Agg. | QLD | NNSW | SNSW | VIC | TAS | WA | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seven News | 288 | 100 | 64 | 60 | 64 | 56 | 30 |
| Seven News - Sun | 272 | 81 | 63 | 56 | 72 | 55 | 31 |
| Nine News | 248 | 52 | 104 | 42 | 49 | * | * |
| Nine News - Sun | 243 | 49 | 107 | 36 | 51 | * | * |
- didnât make top 20
(sorry, closed the tab with the exact week I used so canât link)
I think Nine News will still win its timeslot in Newcastle, but thereâs a chance 7 News could now win that timeslot overall across N.NSW.
The wonks from Wollongong keep WINning like Charlie Sheen in a room full of blow.
The mood inside NBN News following the confirmation is one of distress, according to a source within the organisation who spoke to Mediaweek on condition of anonymity.
âSadness, disappointment, loss, despair, anxiety â just a few words to describe how we are feeling. But we are all supporting each other as best possible,â the source said.
The source also raised concerns about the handling of internal communications, alleging some staff had learned of their redundancies informally before receiving any official notification.
âThereâs also been people who âaccidentallyâ found out their job has been made redundant yet still havenât received any official comms,â they said.
âThe communications coming out of WIN are pretty woeful.â
The Gordons run their TV stations like they co-own the Dragons. Incompetently.
You say that but they have survived, everyone else is gone except Southern Cross who have merged up.
Probably got lucky somewhere along the way.
That, or Bruce has signed a deal with the devil. ![]()
There must be a contract in place to supply 10 News for northern NSW. My understanding is that there is a potential conflict here, but perhaps its been given the all clear
For all we know, theyâre just ripping and reading from somewhere else. Could have been using NBNâs headlines off the website for ages, just not acknowleding it.
Common in the United States where one major network station (ABC, CBS, NBC) provides another station (FOX, CW, etc), whether itâs co-owned or not, with news from their sources.
That would be odd for WIN to be producing these as a 10 affiliate but rip and read from NBN though, considering I did notice in the early stages at least the sources acknowledged at the end of the noodle update.. but then again its WIN⌠they seem to do the unthinkable and unbelievable
Exactly.
I wonder whatâs the mood is like in Darwin? Similar I guess?
There shouldnât be anyone in Darwin other than GM and sales. There may be a VJ for the updates and an occasional techie. Shouldnât be anyone else?
Looks like Jane Goldsmith is presenting tonight and she did Tuesday. Did she present last night also?
Do we know anything beyond next week as to who the newspresenter will be?
Yes she did.
Iâm also curious on if thereâll be any mention of the changes during this Sundayâs bulletin as itâs the last nbn weekend bulletin.
