NBN News

Yes, I’ve always thought 9NBN Gold Coast would be better off with the Sydney bulletin at 6pm then a replay of Nine Gold Coast News at 7pm.

Thanks for posting @Travis

As highlighted in the article, it’s all still unconfirmed - but it’s the most likely option at this stage that’s being considered (according to sources)

Um why? Sydney is further away?

The title alongside the majority of that article is pretty misleading.

And from what I’ve seen extremely Sydney centric, so unlikely to have anything relevant to Gold Coast viewers.

Probably there was a time (last century?) when a Sydney news bulletin might have had some attraction possibly for tourists etc but the local population has expanded so much that tourists are a small fraction of the audience.

Moving on …

If TV news is still around when the Gold Coast becomes a proper 2nd metropolitan area for Queensland (ie, reaching a population of 1 million+), surely it’ll be time for Seven and/or Nine to launch a GC-specific 6pm bulletin?

That is more likely to happen than Gold Coast viewers ever getting to watch Nine News Sydney via terrestrial TV, I think.

I’m not from the area so don’t know all the details, but is Ch9 and NBN two separate channels in Gold Coast? Essentially a relay of each other except for the news?

NBN is the only regional broadcaster that shows local news 7 days a week.

7 Tasmania would beg to differ.

As former SCA employee Tim Hatfield also mentioned on Twitter:

Now been corrected.

NBN is on 8 and Nine on 9, NBN Gold Coast has NBN news at 6pm which has local news inserts. Hot Seat is 5-6pm. Nine Gold Coast has Nine Gold Coast News at 5:30 with Nine News Brisbane at 6pm. The ads on NBN are more focused on the Gold Coast whereas Nine Gold Coast tends to have a mix of Brisbane and Gold Coast ads.

NBN Gold Coast has traditionally run more NSW-aligned programming than Nine Gold Coast, although that may have changed in recent years since Kylie Blucher became MD of NBN as well as QTQ.

Yes, NBN Gold Coast had been showing QLD Intrust Super Cup rugby league games instead of NSW ones, and they take QLD State Election coverage too.

And on that night back in December (I think) when NBN News had to finish early due to major technical difficulties resulting in a handover to Nine News Sydney in progress, NBN Gold Coast viewers saw Nine News Queensland in full.

Not sure whether NBN Gold Coast runs the QTQ or TCN 4pm bulletin on weekdays though, pretty sure it used to be the Sydney one though!

With some recent changes to weather reports (with Northern Rivers now getting their own one), I thought I’d just confirm that the same weather reports are seen on both Taree-Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour feeds, see capture below, Coffs Harbour on the right (though you probably already knew or guessed that).

When did NBN News finally split the forecasts into separate Mid North Coast & Far North Coast editions on weeknights? Last I was up there over four years ago, I’m pretty sure it was still a combined North Coast-wide forecast on weeknights then.

I knew that the transmission changes (resulting in separate Nine MNC feeds for Taree-Port Macquarie and the Coffs/Clarence regions) happened a fair while after my most recent North Coast trip, September 2018 going by a search of the MS database.

Wonder if we might see more localised forecasts for those two regions after July 1, when NBN will no longer have to worry about producing/presenting forecasts for Nine News Local.

I have been wondering this too… I’d love to see a dedicated Central Coast one on weeknights, which would also allow the Newcastle one to focus on the Hunter region. Both are still combined on weeknights, but Central Coast oddly gets their own one on weekends.

Re splitting of Northern Rivers weather, I’m pretty sure that only happened in the last 6-12 months.

Same. Although any dedicated weeknight Central Coast forecast would probably still need to include a look at the temperatures for both Newcastle & Sydney, otherwise you’d have one of Australia’s barest TV weather forecasts with a look at conditions in only four locations (Woy Woy, Gosford, The Entrance and Wyong)!
