NBN News (2015-Feb 2025)

Not sure if this is a new thing or something to fill in time, but just before the playoff to break at 6.55pm last night NBN News had a picture of the ocean with Newcastle’s current temperature and a quick VO from Tash.

Major issues after the first story tonight. Tash stopped to seek clarification on what they were taking, threw to Gavin for a story, he read it and stopped and threw to a break.

Yep. Then they threw to an ad break that seemed to last for almost 10 minutes. Back now and the stories are playing out fine.

I wonder if this has anything to do with producing the bulletin remotely from Brisbane?

Might be a tad slow here, but has it always come from Brisbane (control-wise?)

It’s been controlled from Brisbane since they moved studios in 2021 - prior to then, it was all done in Newcastle.

Studio is still in Newcastle, but now controlled from Brisbane.

The Daily Telegraph with a major “exclusive video”showing a fatal bashing in Newcastle.

Pity NBN News played the same video an hour earlier.

How’s that “exclusive video” going guys???

Everyone does it though, they claim an “Exclusive” or “First” of some sort, no matter how small.

Haven’t seen this before, mic sock with different logos on it. Usually they both say “NBN News”.

Also, they are currently running a “Your Story” series, tonight was on the Screaming Jets band member Grant Walmsley on his career. Quite a long piece, not really news, looked like a time filler and designed to boost tocal content quotas.

More than likely the stickers have fallen off. It seems to be the same size and in the same position as the NBN on the normal side.

Has been running on Wednesday nights for a while now. A longer form story normally on someone who has a strong connection to their community in one way or another. It does get spread around a bit, so it isn’t just Newcastle locals.

In that case, it’s odd that the NBN letters were the.only ones that didn’t off.

Good that the “Your Story” items then aren’t too Newcastle centric then.

They did a two way with Lauren Kempe reporting on the weather. Gavin asked the questions while Natasha was on screen alone grinning - wrong button Brisbane.

Ally Langton did an ACA promo (aired 11:58 today):

She said: “Join me at 7pm after your NBN News”

The “Your” sounds unnecessary though… why not just ‘after NBN News’ (though I’m waiting for her to say ‘On Channel Nine’ after that  ).

Montanna Clare reading her first sports bully last night and did a sterling job

Interesting figures from Gavin below which suggests Seven is getting harrassed even in New England.

“What an incredible year along side Tash and a team that absolutely smashed it in 24. Their work blows me away every night. To increase audience in every aspect of the business in this media climate is a testament to everyone’s phenomenal skills and talent. It’s an awesome team and we love working out of Newcastle for Northern NSW. Time for me to take a break from NBN for the summer.”

The release I saw earlier this year suggests NBN News was struggling to beat 7 News in New England on weekends, let alone weeknights when they have local news.

I wonder if the increases Gavin is referring to relates to streaming on 9Now, which is one advantage they have, though only in Newcastle and Northern Rivers. It’d be interesting to see how that is impacting on ratings. Though I don’t think streaming has been expanded any further as yet?

The line was “every aspect of the business” which made me wonder about New England.

Its just a publicity spin from NBN TV and Nine.

I remember hearing NRTV marketed they were Number 1 in Northern Rivers in March 1992 - in only the third month of aggregation - BUT this was before Prime Television (now 7 NNSW) arriving on 1 May 1992. After that I didnt hear of any other such publicity - which is probably best explained by the locally produced Ten Evening News disappearing and being replaced by Ten Eyewitness News - attempting to justify it by saying it was done to give viewers choice stating News on all 3 commercial channels was not giving viewers choice.

That’s different to what I heard.

NRTV/TEN Evening News was still Number 1 in the Northern Rivers when it was axed in 1995. The axing was due purely for costs reasons, Ten NNSW said it had become too uneconomical to produce, quoting it had cost them $700,000 a year to make (in 1995).

I also recall that Prime then went from the No 3 bulletin in the Northern Rivers TV market to No 1 bulletin after that. Sometime after that NBN News became No 1, but Prime/7 has regained that in recent years.

Well what I recall also being said was that it wasnt commercially viable for a station that was ranked third in the Northern Rivers to continue to produce local news. The fact that they didnt continue to promote it as number 1 local news and the programs Ten were airing at the time did not provide the strength it would have had if it had been affiliated with Seven or Nine. The main 3 programs other than the news that delivered relatively consistently back then was E Street, Neighbours and Hinch. Hinch ended at end of 1993 with Alan Jones having a shortlived program at 7pm. It wasnt long after that Ten Evening News was axed.

not often you see the microphone decal peeling off as clearly as this lol
