NBN News (2015-Feb 2025)

So?

At 6:23pm, NBN does their network-wide weather update, the one before this is inside the local window.

But the 6:23pm one showed Newcastle temperatures?

Are the Newcastle temperatures going network-wide? Or are they overlaying local graphics in each area

I’ll make a note to watch the Central Coast bulletin soon and see if it appears on that. Only problem is that the end weather forecast is a combined Newcastle/Central Coast one (at least when there is a dedicated weather presenter, or if Gavin does it).

We see the Newcastle temperature in Coffs Harbour so it’s network wide.

Saw an “NBN News Rewind” piece tonight with a difference, in that it had a Port Macquarie and Wauchope focus, of town parades from the 60s and 70s. Good to see one that wasn’t Newcastle centric.

But this bit puzzled me, they said one of the parades was “proudly covered by NBN News in 1971”. But why would they, since they weren’t broadcasting into that area then

I guess they would’ve covered it as new in the surrounding area perhaps.

Tonight gave me absolute evidence that NBN News is not live. In an accident report, there was no mention of a woman being hit by a car and dying at the scene. This was in addition to the woman that was taken to Gosford Hospital

But even pre aggregation some of the adjacent areas received NBN TV.

Wasn’t there a plan at one point for NBN and ECN to merge but it wasn’t allowed so ECN partnered with NEN? I remember reading this somewhere

NBN News is live, at least for Newcastle audiences, but may have had outdated information.

The NBN signal prior to aggregation never got further north than Taree at best.

Never heard of any plan for ECN to merge with NBN, but not beyond the realms of possibility to my eyes from a business sense.

I heard the Australian Broadcasting Control Board rejected the plan as at the time ECN were having financial difficulties.

In relation to NBN broadcast, I receive the Newcastle feed from Mt Sugarloaf (I’m in Abermain). This information was available before 5:30pm so should have been available

I’ve seen pictures of a street overlooking Coffs Harbour Airport from the mid 1960s, which is quite elevated and there were some Band 2 antennas on roofs aiming southwards. Newcastle is an easy catch via tropo into Coffs and I’m sure that the Ch 3 signal would have been a semi regular guest in locals lounge rooms back in the day. Rylstone in the Central Tablelands had many houses with Band 2 setups on high masts aiming east. That Ch 3 signal was a powerhouse.

i thought it was ECN becoming a relay outlet for NRN? An arrangement which had a short life when ECN went into receivership and later went into an arrangement with NEN9.

Yeah, there’ll be the odd one like that, but nothing meaningful in the context of why they would cover local news in Port/Wauchope in 1971.

To add to your list, I have seen one or two NBN-3 antennas in Tamworth too.

My understanding is that there was a brief memorandum of understanding between 1966 and 1971 where ECN had partnered with NRN before NRN and RTN formed a partnership. No formal arrangements were made and when ECN had financial difficulties in 1968-69, they looked to NRN and NBN initially before the merger with NEN. Geographically the arrangements never made sense to me but given the denial of a merger with NBN was probably the only achievable way forward

So i’ve noticed NBN News doesn’t report on a lot of suicides. The lady ran out into traffic causing the accident in one carriageway, then she got hit in the other carriageway… it’s the same with the person who ran their car off Strezlecki lookout… NBN News didn’t report on it… But yes, NBN is live in Newcastle except Gavin’s weather is pre-recorded a lot of the time… except recently i’ve seen Lauren Kemp live for the Newcastle weather in the Newcastle window a few times.

Traditionally, a lot of those incidents aren’t reported on the news so it’s not at all surprising that they aren’t covering it.

Agree, only if it is a murder suicide or something like that.

Suicides are (sadly) quite common in our society.

Our media doesn’t generally report it - its long been held that reporting it can be incredibly distressing to family and friends, and that it can spark ‘copycat’ attempts. I don’t believe it’s a rule per say, rather a commonly held position.

While they’re important elements to be mindful of, we have a reasonably high rate of suicide in Australia (especially men) that gets very little coverage because its often easier not to broach the subject in reporting.

I feel like NBN News are really putting out a good product, well for Newcastle at least.

Outside of the local window tonight there were 2 exclusive stories, one about the high speed rail and Jane Goldsmith did a story on border force in Newcastle harbour.

Plus all the live crosses and weather outside broadcasts.
