This annoys me so much. I have actually complained to them before about that but nothing changes. Half the broadcast is labeled breaking news and that has been going on for over a decade. I was hoping this refresh would finally be the end of it but sadly not.

Breaking news no longer means what it used to.

Almost none of what makes it onto Nightly News is what any of us would consider “breaking” when it airs in the eastern US and it definitely is not breaking when it airs 3 hours later in the west (plus an additional hour later in Alaska).

Perth is treated much better by the Australian networks in comparison. The American networks rarely produce a western edition anymore unless something major happens in those 3-4 hours and even then they usually just find a spot to throw in the changes with very obvious cuts.

NBC still has one of the highest quality broadcasts that exist but they have definitely come down from where they used to be.

Here’s the better version with no ads.

Aside from 10 on the weekends, do our networks produce western editions?

Only 7 stories in a national newscast is much less than I expected

The second item of Monday night bulletin, the meeting between US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Chinese President Xi Jinping, was not Breaking News at all, as it took place on Monday morning US time.

I think the national bulletin has too many special reports, it should be kept to one such report per night. I would like to see more actual news from across America and around the world, using affiliates like CNBC and Sky News UK if needed.

Don’t forget Nightly News is usually surrounded by local newscasts, so their focus is detailed national/international reporting more than volume.

Top Story with Tom Llamas (on NBC News Now) is similar but longer, so they cover more. Edited versions are on the NBC News YouTube.

I don’t mind the new look. The white titlecard looks very Seven.

But I don’t think the Peacock head on the left side of the super / don’t miss box looks right. It looks out of place.

I think they need a new backdrop image though. Although “cool” the blue glass “N” backdrop doesn’t really suit a flagship news bulletin

Also I don’t really get the point of presenting in front of a desk that you don’t use. They only use the smaller one… why is the big one there?

What would be cool would be to swap the big desk out for a set piece that is the NBC peacock. Imagine that on the ground lit up. Whether it’s just a white outline or a coloured one. Would look heaps better.

Further to what tv_lee said, the local newscasts that surround the national news are typically a mix of local, national and international news. And in big markets the local newscasts will use both national reporters and local reporters to cover big local and international stories.

A whole new look

Feels like NBC Today’s been relaunching every 6 months or something.

Looks nice enough though.

They’ve really messed up the outside - pan into the studio - look in recent times. Those plant boxes look horrid.

I wonder why they don’t do the crowds cheering and waving outside the studio anymore. I used to remember that as a distinctive feature of NBC Today’s openers about 10 years ago.
