Narrowcast and AM Narrowband Radio

Finding formats that do more than play “ten in a row” is one way radio could differentiate itself from “Nigel the Computer”. In 1974, in the absence of so many alternatives radio didn’t need it. Now – it does.

With Vision Radio Australia now in Sydney on DAB+, a look at their website has revealed that they now intend to switch off their AM signal sometime in the future. Their AM station is on 1611kHz in Western Sydney.

I wonder who will want 1611kHz in Sydney?
I’m also pondering if the transmitter location of the licence might be moved elsewhere with the site being located not too far from Western Sydney Airport (under construction).

Gee, if Vision don’t want AM frequencies, you’ve got to wonder who would?

With some AM radio tuners only tuning to 1620 or 1629kHz, you would have to suspect that perhaps one of the existing MW narrowcasters currently using 1638 to 1701kHz might & there’s a mix of Arabic, Greek & Indian language broadcasters on those frequencies in Sydney.
Then there’s also Faith FM that has been expanding rapidly throughout the country that might consider it.
I suspect at the moment none of the above broadcasters would be aware that the frequency might become available in the future.
I’m sure SEN would like the income that leasing the licence would generate given their financial status.

Can anyone confirm the status of 87.6 Swan Hill?

Licenced to Niche Radio (Rete Italia) and appears on Rete Italia’s website…

as well as SEN’s broadcast guide as an SEN Track relay…

and KIX Country’s website.

Is it being timeshared? :stuck_out_tongue:

I didn’t know the VIC FM band was a hotel in Coolangatta?

Rete Italia is on 87.6, Sen Track is on 88fm and KIX Country is gone.

On Sen Track from what I heard the first commerical in the break was always a local Swan Hill one before having a mixture of national and Mildura commericals unsure if Ace is inserting the first commerical into the feed or if Mildura hears the same thing

I really hope 3GL succeeds but:

I don’t necessarily have an issue with a few music/popular culture history drop-ins on a music format but in the case of oldies where the music is now 50+ years old it doesn’t work for a younger audience (anyone under about age 65). Two reasons:

  1. Younger listeners can’t relate to something they didn’t experience.

  2. Older listeners don’t need to be reminded how old the music is and therefore how old they are. Oldies programmers/DJ’s beat this approach to death in the ‘80s and ‘90s thus hanging the “it’s O-L-D!” noose around the neck of the music. Time to move on so that other aged listeners can have fun with the music itself.

This is a comment specific to the oldies format (which is not the same as “greatest hits”).

3GL is off air again

HOT FM is broadcasting without a license on 87.8 FM in Charleville and its over powered, they don’t mention this frequency on their website, but they do on their Facebook page.

The address on their website is 16 Wills Street, Charleville Qld 4470 which is the home of the local commercial operators CCC 101.7 FM and 4VL 918AM.

You’d think commercial operators would know not to do this.

Here is a screencap of their Facebook page in case they edit/delete their posts.

so it’s called HOT FM but the URL is hottfm :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I forgot to mention, the reason this came up is they are interfering with a distant licensed narrowcast station.

4VL was actually at 14 Wills Street, although I believe they are no longer there and are now 100% on relay from Kingaroy and Longreach.

The picture shared by Warrego Signs show the doors which match up to the building next door.

The station appears to be run by Darryl Kirkup who has previously been at 4RR, the community station in Charleville.

They also have hottfm.com.au which is registered to Jason Stead of Hawkesbury Gold infamy. I don’t know if he is involved, or just made the website.
The 1300 phone number is owned by Bullant Communications, which is Jason’s company.

It also got a mention with some construction photos in the November issue of the Murweh Shire newsletter.

Surely it’s legit if it’s got real premises, signwritting and legit advertising. The ACMA database is notorious for taking a while to update - maybe the licence has been approved but the database just hasn’t updated yet?
