I agree I think the reason why it has been so successful on its return is because the judging has been pleasant and the contestants not too horrible

Episode 18 - Ultimate Instant Restaurant - Simone & Viviana QLD

Monday 4 November7:30 PM

We’re back in Brisbane for the third Ultimate Instant Restaurant, where the modern Italians, Simone and Viviana, hope to live up their record-breaking reputation. After receiving a confidence boost from their friends and loved ones, the duo complete their shopping and set up their Instant Restaurant, Sotto le Stelle, for the third time.

At their previous Instant Restaurant, the friends made history scoring a record-breaking 104 - the highest Instant Restaurant score in the MKR’s 14-year history.

With the clock ticking, Simone and Viviana begin preparing their six dishes. Despite the mammoth task ahead of them, they remain calm and confident in their ability.

When the guest teams arrive, Janey and Maddie waste no time as they begin interrogating Rob and Liam over their accusation of strategic scoring. Both teams hold their ground, creating an uneasy tension around the table.

When judges Manu Fieldel and Colin Fassnidge arrive, Simone and Viviana reveal their menu to the guests.
Everyone has high hopes for an amazing dinner, though some guests would prefer the Italians to fail for a change.

Finale will be Tuesday Nov 19.

Saw the first two ultimate instant restaurants this weekend.

Rob and Liam really came back down to earth with a thud, after enjoying the privileges of being guest judges for a day. They struggled during the cook and even forgot the items when reciting the menu to their guests. The brothers are a great team but could miss out on a semi finals spot.

Caz and Fergus were let down by their cooking techniques but received a higher score because their dishes tasted better. I would love to try their scallops squared but swap the curry butter with a herb butter or seafood sauce.

Rollercoaster of dishes

Dessert sweetens the score for Simone and Viviana

Tonight, MKR’s Ultimate Instant Restaurant round saw Simone and Viviana serve their most ambitious menu yet. A rollercoaster of dishes saw their scores range from four to a perfect 10.

Dessert saved the day, and the modern Italians landed safely at the top of the leaderboard with a total score of 68 out of 100.

Tonight’s menu included Prosciutto and Melon Cheesecake or Crostini di Polenta for entrĂ©e, Pappardelle with Duck Ragu or Risotto with Scampi and Stracciatella for main, and Tiramisu or Sfogliatella Ricca (pastry shell filled with custard) for dessert.

Mike, who pulled no punches, admitted: “Of course I want them to fail. It’s a competition.” Mike stated there wasn’t room for two Italian teams in the final, confident he and Pete would prevail over Simone and Viviana.

Maddie called out Rob and Liam on their strategic scoring at the last Ultimate Instant Restaurant hosted by Caz and Fergus. Still, Liam stood firm, declaring: “I regret nothing I said at the last Instant Restaurant. I believed it, so I said it.”

Maddie retorted: “I think we agreed to disagree. What can we say?”

Judge Manu Feildel scored the entrĂ©e of Crostini di Polenta a nine, admitting: “We’ve had a lot of polenta in this competition. This one is the best we’ve had.” In contrast, the Prosciutto and Melon Cheesecake entrĂ©e was below par, with Mike calling it “crap.” Judge Colin Fassnidge scored the dish a lowly four.

Simone and Viviana were confident the mains were their strongest dishes, but after setting the bar so high at the last Instant Restaurant, Manu was disappointed in tonight’s pappardelle.

“I’m going to start by saying the ravioli that you cooked for us last time was probably in the top three best pasta dishes I’ve ever had in my life. Two different people cooked this. I felt that the pasta was maybe too al dente. The ragu could have cooked together a bit more, a bit longer, a bit more seasoning, a bit more love,” admitted Manu, scoring the dish a six.

Colin had “such high hopes for the risotto”, but after praising the flavour, the undercooked rice left him underwhelmed, scoring the dish a five. Mike jumped in to declare he makes a much better risotto.

After tough feedback on their mains, the pressure of the competition overwhelmed Viviana. “I need a minute”, an emotional Viviana acknowledged: “This challenge is destroying. It destroys your mind.”

Simone professed: “We’re not professional, amore, we’re home cooks. This is hard.”

After their stumbles, Simone and Viviana’s dessert skills shone bright. Colin’s “elegant” tiramisu scored a nine. Manu scored his Sfogliatella Ricca a 10, calling the dish “a work of art.”

“Aprons on, knives out”

Mike and Pete go high risk hoping for high reward

Tonight’s MKR Ultimate Instant Restaurant saw fussy friends Mike and Pete set out to prove they can cook more than traditional Italian fare, serving up an eclectic menu that ultimately kept them safe from elimination with a total score of 63 out of 100.

The confidence was high in the kitchen as Mike proclaimed: “We are going to kick ass. Aprons on, knives out!”

Tonight’s menu included Fish and Chips with Chilli Sauce or Mushroom Risotto for entrĂ©e, Cauliflower steak with Cannellini Bean puree and Chimichurri sauce or Squid Ink Pasta with King Prawns for the main, followed by dessert of CrĂšme BrĂ»lĂ©e or Apple Custard Pie with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream.

At the table, Janey and Maddie dropped a truth bomb on Simone and Viviana, revealing Mike called their entree “crap” at last night’s Ultimate Instant Restaurant. Mike also declared he could make a better risotto than Simone and Viviana.

Viviana found Mike and Pete’s comments “disrespectful.” Simone added: “You might think we are overreacting, but that’s what we feel. We got a fire inside. He’s Italian, he knows.”

Mike and Pete prayed their high-risk entrees would equal high rewards. Unfortunately, the dishes didn’t go down well. Judge Manu Feildel was “very underwhelmed” with the fish and chips scoring the dish a four. Judge Colin Fassnidge scored the risotto a six. He praised how Mike and Pete cooked the rice and field mushrooms but declared the sauce in Simone and Viviana’s risotto “had a lot more oomph and a bit more flavour.”

Disappointed by the entrĂ©e feedback, Mike and Pete pressed on with their mains including their self-confessed “ballsy” dish of cauliflower steak. Competitors Rob and Liam, currently on the bottom of the leaderboard, shocked the table by ordering the vegetarian main admitting there was more room for error with the dish.

Colin scored the squid ink pasta a six noting: “I want more sauce. I want it dripping in sauce. It was a half-half dish for me.” Manu loved his cauliflower steak recognising the risky dish paid off, scoring an eight, while Rob and Liam had a very different opinion.

Manu’s “absolutely delicious” dessert of creme brĂ»lĂ©e scored a nine. He noted the only negative was the disc of caramel sugar was a little too thick. Colin scored his apple custard pie a seven with some elements to fix but overall, it was a good dessert.

After the scores were revealed, Pete said: “We are pumped about being second on the leaderboard. We didn’t pip the Italians off the post, but we gave them a pretty good run for their money.”

Synopsis for the first final next Tuesday (November 12)

The top four cooking teams return to Kitchen HQ for the start of Finals Round. Their challenge is to create a banquet and fight for an advantage going into the semi-finals.

Caught up with Mike and Pete’s instant restaurant episode this afternoon.

The two men made some interesting choices with the menu. Fish skin as chips? Fish served with chilli jam? Prawns cured with salt and sugar rather than poached? They really divided the guests. It was the cauliflower steak and the creme brulee that saved Mike and Pete from elimination.

My prediction for Monday is that Rob and Liam would mark down their score, but Janey and Maddie should do enough to reach the finals. Maybe they could reach the 70 mark.

This season will have a one-off Sunday broadcast on November 17 at 7pm, for the first semi final.

“Losing is not on our menu”

Kitchen queens triumph as barbeque brothers burn out

Tonight, MKR’s final Ultimate Instant Restaurant came down to the wire, with kitchen queens Janey and Maddie fighting for a coveted spot in the top four.

With the threat of elimination hanging in the balance, the competition was intense as competitive brothers Rob and Liam – sitting at the bottom of the leaderboard – hoped the kitchen queens stumbled. “I’m hoping this is classic Janey and Maddie tonight: over promise, under deliver. It’s going to go very well for us,” Liam said.

“Losing out tonight to Rob and Liam is not on our menu.” Janey declared.

Janey and Maddie triumphed with a score of 63 out of 100, and Rob and Liam were eliminated from MKR.

Tonight, the mother and daughter team served up a sophisticated menu of Fettuccine with Blue Swimmer Crab with Lemon and Chilli or Smoked Trout and Leek Tart for entrée, Pan Fried Chicken Breast with Wild Mushroom Cream and Truffle Potatoes or Seafood Pie with Paris Mash and Tomato Relish for main, and dessert of Piña Colada with Coconut Sorbet or Salted Chocolate Tart with Mint Ice Cream.

Judge Manu Feildel chose the fettuccine for entrĂ©e, scoring the dish an eight and praising the “absolutely delicious” flavour, but Maddie’s concerns that the pastry in their leek tart entrĂ©e was undercooked came to fruition. Judge Colin Fassnidge “loved the essence of the trout and the mixture,” but the undercooked pastry earnt the dish a five.

Back in the kitchen, an emotional Maddie admitted: “I’m just feeling the pressure of it all in this moment. I really want to put up the best food we possibly can.”

Janey acknowledged her focus on getting the dishes out was coming at a cost: “I didn’t listen to my daughter, and I didn’t realise how stressed she was.” Ever supportive of her much-loved daughter, Janey continued: “I’m so proud and in awe of her, that she actually cares so much.”

The seafood pie got mixed reviews. Manu scored the dish a six, admitting: “The filling was delicious” but with undercooked pastry and a tomato relish that “didn’t belong to the dish” let them down. Confused, Viviana said: “I was expecting a pie, but it was a soup with the top of a pie.”

Colin chose the chicken for his main. He praised the dish but noted, “If the potatoes had a bit more love, it would have been an excellent dish.” In contrast, Liam was critical of the chicken dish: “I feel like grandma could have cooked that any day of the week, and what we serve, grandma couldn’t have done.”

After Rob and Liam’s critical comments about the dish, Caz said: “They’ve talked themselves into not enjoying it beforehand because they don’t want to be at the bottom. I wouldn’t want to be in their chairs.”

Determined not to be dethroned by dessert, the kitchen queens rallied. Colin chose the chocolate tart, scoring “their best dish of the night” an eight. Manu scored his dessert of pina colada a five given the undercooked pineapple and issues with the coconut sorbet.

Departing the competition, Liam said: “We’ve proven through this competition we’re great cooks. We had one really bad day. We left the door wide open for everyone to beat us. It’s been a great experience doing it with my brother. Love you, bro.”

Despite their robust rivalry Maddie said: “Sorry guys. It didn’t work out your way tonight, but we think you guys are great, and thank you.”

Tonight’s cook-off was to determine the match-ups for the semi-final, which was 1 v 4 and 2 v 3. However, the synopses of the online guides gave away tonight’s result.

Manu and Colin each gave a score out of 10 for the main and the dessert.

The final scores were:
Caz and Fergus: 32/40
Mike and Pete: 31/40
Simone and Viviana: 30/40
Janey and Maddie: 25/40

The top two teams (Caz and Fergus, and Mike and Pete) would have a 5 minute advantage for each course in the semi final.

It’s good that the show mixes things up every year but I feel like some changes are not for the better.

Great that they brought back the iconic MKR door bell ring in each episode. A shame they have got rid of the iconic opening credits theme showing all the teams competing.

This year, they had the gatecrashers which created a lot of contrived “drama” but this means that they had some teams compete in three rounds of instant restaurants. This was a bit much.

I think the show worked better when they did two individual rounds of instant restaurants and then had another round, which brought together the remaining contestants.

I feel most shows have got rid of their opening credits. I don’t understand it. The blocks opening credits were great, MasterChef the same, thank god you’re here also did it. What is the reason for it?
