Yes. I think there needs to be some sort of limit to what is classed a single.
I roll my eyes every time I hear the media proclaim that an artist has broken a new record for the number of singles in the chart. There just can’t be a fair comparison to former Singles charts that were based on sales.
Following his NRL grand final performance, Teddy Swims will begin his tour of Australia and NZ in Christchurch on October 7. Matt Corby will be guest artist for the tour.
Watching Rage on Saturday and sombr had three songs in the top 10. That’s fine. As long as a track has a decent video, that’s enough to qualify as a single. An official video that the artist (and record company) is prepared to put their name to.
Yeah sure, according to this classification Madonna’s Rescue me (which was thrashed by FM 104 Triple M when it was CHR) wouldn’t make the cut.
It’s a pity that this song only peaked at #3, it rips. Originally released in 2024, remixed in May this year and then went viral on TT with over 100k videos. Currently #4 - [NLT NBB] (TikTok - Make Your Day)
Another artist who flooded the singles chart following the release of his debut album “I Barely Know Her”.
Prepare for Ed Sheeran to flood the singles chart next week when “Play” comes out this Friday.
Jade Thirlwall (of Little Mix fame) also drops her debut album, “That’s Showbiz, Baby”, this Friday but given her music has not impacted the singles charts I wouldn’t be surprised if the album doesn’t chart in Australia.
prior to each new album the artist / record company needs to nominate 3 songs that are “singles eligible” (this number was picked because in the old days you’d often only get 3 singles out of a CD)
each of these singles are only eligible for singles charts if there is a legitimate music video made (ie - not just a lyric video.) filmed, live performances are fine.
there are ways around this - artist could release multiple EP’s for example, but it should hopefully help
I think they should be stricter than that. The song that is a single should be nominated and there should be a break of a week or two before another song can be nominated as a single and then limit it to 3 maximum.
Not a bad system. Pretty good in fact. Some artists should be able to nominate maybe five or six.
But then again we’re possibly overthinking this. Caught up with legacy ideas of what the charts represent and trying to apply outdated definitions of what a single is.
I guess the term single was always a bit of a misnomer anyway. Maybe we should just accept the modern singles chart as being a reflection of the latest/viral songs people are listening to. It’s not some sort of ideal playlist.
Not one song from this album has charted in Australia but I wouldn’t be surprised if the album does chart when the Albums chart is updated this Friday at 5:00pm.
The song “Angel of My Dreams” received some airplay on CADA 96.1 last year.
Jade (Thirlwall) is the first member of Little Mix to release a debut solo album. Perrie’s (Edwards) debut album will drop later this month.
