Those two songs were actually in the chart last week too.
Thankfully yet to hear either of them and I work retail and you are bombarded with Christmas songs every other song this time of year.
The Christmas tunes by Wham! and Marian Carey are in the top 10 already.
Band Aidâs 1984 original âDo They Know Itâs Christmasâ is (to my ears) a better song than both of those. Iâm a bit surprised it doesnât have the profile of the Wham! or Mariah songs these days, given it was huge at the time and had a cast of rock stars.
The arrangement and chorus is catchy but the lyrics are true dogshit (imho) and promote an unhelpful and inaccurate narrative about Africa (plenty of rivers flow in Africa⌠the strong Christianity in many countries means they are well aware itâs ChristmasâŚI could go on).
Kind of releated but they played âWe Are The Worldâ on the Coles instore radio tonight and the Band Aid song is so much better even if the production is very dated (as it is for a lot of 80s pop music)
I like âWe Are The Worldâ too, but agree Band Aidâs effort is better.
Meanwhile, Wham hits number one in the UK ahead of Mariah Carey. In 1984, Whamâs Last Christmas was kept out of the number one position by Do They Know Itâs Christmas.
Rockinâ Around the Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee has topped the Billboard Hot 100 and has been number one for two weeks. It was recorded in 1958 and after 65 years, Brenda Lee has recorded a film clip for it in 2023. It features cameos by country stars Tanya Tucker and Trisha Yearwood. Is this the reason she is ahead of Mariah Carey this year or is Spotify manipulating algorithms that promote this song ahead of all others?
I feel Mariah Careyâs song isnât as popular this year. Iâve only heard it play once this year.
Still one time too many
That can only be a good thing though.
Me too, Heard it for the first time on Tuesday.
I feel like a lot of radio stations etc have pulled back on her song as people are a little over it.
Good. I think weâre all way over it. Now, Iâm getting frustrated hearing the Ed Sheeran/Elton John track too much.
Donât think I have heard this one but given I really donât like Sheeran Iâm glad I havenât.
Dropped to number 3 in Australia this week whuch means two current singles by Jack Harlow and Tate McRae are at the top of the chart.
No LadBaby (yay) this year will open the race to Xmas no 1 up significantly in the UK
