Another one-hit wonder that crossed my mind recently.
Who remembers the 2008 song “Mercy” by Duffy? These days it only gets airplay on smoothfm, as it did on its Sydney and Melbourne stations just before 8:30pm this evening.

I remember that one … good song… deserves more airplay than others from that era.
Taylor Swift announced 1989 (Taylor’s Version) at her last LA show of The Eras Tour!
1989 TV OUT OCTOBER 27!
Warwick Avenue doesn’t appear to have charted in Australia but did well elsewhere.
She also had a pretty harrowing experience a few years back.
I thought she was singing about bird seed
Remember a few years back (2014-9) I lived there for a bit) it got constant plays on 93.9 RoccyFM Young, it may still do on other SRN stations.
Also its only 15 years old? I thought it was a much older song than that!
It was released on February 11, 2008, then entered the Australian ARIA Singles Chart at #50 in the week starting April 27 the same year, eventually peaking at #26 in the week starting September 7.
It briefly re-entered the charts in September 2012 upon Shiane Hawke performing the song on The X Factor (that season was won by Samantha Jade).
Never knew exactly where this expletive laden chant in The Angel’s “Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again” originated… Now I know!
Famously covered by Reg Reagan (the alter ego of Matthew Johns) and retitled “Am I Ever Gonna See the Biff Again?”.
While the song was made famous on Channel Nine’s “Footy Show”, I did see its music video numerous times on rage on the ABC.
That was actually a parody rather than a cover, since all the lyrics were changed. Just like something by Weird Al Yankovic.
Speaking of which. I think it was funny how the movie about him was supposedly a biopic but it was also actually a parody of his life. Having a torrid affair with Madonna, killing drug lord Pablo Escobar, beating Prince for a music award, having a number one single on the Billboard chart, having his album go five times platinum, Michael Jackson parodying a Weird Al song, rivalling The Beatles for the most singles in the chart at one time. None of it was true. ![]()
The Rolling Stones have slipped out an announcement about their new album using a cryptic local newspaper advert. ![]()
The i in (Hackney) Diamonds is dotted with the band’s tongue and lips logo. Diamonds is also a reference to the Rolling Stones’s 60th anniversary tour, which began last year in Madrid.
References to at least three of the band’s best-known hits are included in the text of the advert: (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction, Gimme Shelter and Shattered.
According to the NME, the font used for the words Hackney Diamonds is the same as the one used on their 1978 album Some Girls. And “Est 1962”, at the foot of the advert, is a reference to the year the Rolling Stones were formed.
A web link takes users to a site to register their interest. The conditions list Universal Music Group, which handles the Rolling Stones’ back catalogue.
You’d think Apple would take into account the length of a song when working out fees for downloads in the iTunes Store.
I have noticed on Frenzal Rhomb’s 1996 album “Not So Tough Now” which have some tracks that are only 4 seconds long yet the price for a download is still $2.19 each! There are 53 tracks on that album (must be a record!). Fortunately, the whole album is only $16.99
…
FYI - there seems to be a known issue with iTunes on Mac and PC whereby the song preview in the iTunes Store for releases after 23 July 2023 won’t play… not sure if anyone else here has experienced this? Apple have apparently admitted there is an issue.
Am I the only one who finds it weird that Cruel Summer by Taylor Swift a song that came out in 2019 is all of a sudden getting a bunch of traction over the last month or so? I don’t know if there is a reason it’s become a staple on radio and doing really well on streaming. I just find it kind of weird a song that old is getting this kind of traction. For the record, I like the song I’m just baffled by it.
When Olivia Rodrigo released “deja vu” in 2021, there were strong comparisons with that said Taylor song, so much so that she listed her as a co-writer.
I also remember Crazy Town going viral with its 2001 song “Butterfly”, which was actually recorded in 1999.
It wasnt released as a single in Australia until 2001 either and was back in a time when Radio Stations still had a tight grip over what ‘new’ music got a run too - I recall that both Nova and Channel [V] gave this a good run too which would have helped.

Same goes with Mya’s “Case of the Ex” and Linkin Park’s “One Step Closer”, which, according to Wikipedia, were released on July 11 and August 29 (both in 2000) respectively.
The former hit number one on the ARIA Charts and it was one of the biggest hits of 2001.
Turns out it got a release in the US, this year (only a few weeks ago)
Thanks, That makes a lot of sense now.
