Some random music history here.

In June 2009 The Script released a song called “Before the Worst”, which tanked in the UK and Ireland charts.

However, it became a top ten hit in Australia, partially because they performed it at that year’s NRL Grand Final during their visit to the country at the time that it started to play on the radio.

It is interesting how a lot of songs do really well in some countries, but badly in others.

Also, while “We Cry” was first sent to Australian radio in September 2008, it wasn’t until May 2009 that it reached its peak on the Australian music charts, coming in at #82. By this point, “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved” and “Breakeven” had already charted in the top 50 (the latter peaked at #3 in the week beginning May 31, 2009).

It’s the 1st December… and in The Breakfast Show this morning, Zoe Ball officially switched on Christmas for Radio 2 as the network starts playing festive tunes from today!

To further spread seasonal joy, the network also reveals the Top 40 Most Streamed Christmas No. 1s of all-time, as compiled exclusively by the Official Charts Company for Radio 2 and BBC Sounds.

Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) today announced two new charts, the Australian Dance Singles Chart and the Australian Dance Albums Chart, which will be available at 4.00pm AEST this Friday with the first chart publication date to be Monday, 5 December.

ARIA will report the top 20 dance singles and top 10 dance albums in the charts, which are the second and third new charts to be introduced in 2022, after the New Music Chart became the first chart to be introduced in three years last June.

Good that they are recognizing the popularity of Dance Music across the world but I have my doubts about what qualifies as “dance” when I see Heat Waves by Glass Animals at number 3 and Sway My Way by R3hab & Amy Shark. I would not consider these Dance tracks in any way.

And that charts are pretty meaningless these days.

True. A third of those songs were released years ago. Obviously heavily influenced by streaming numbers.

As much as I loved the original “Blue” by Eiffel 65, I find the 2022 edition (I’m Good (Blue)) by David Guetta and Bebe Rexha to be rather annoying.

I’m also made to believe that it’s close to or nearly two years since “Heat Waves” by Glass Animals first entered the top 50, too.

Admittedly, I always check the ARIA Charts every Sunday (though they are updated on Fridays I always have a habit of checking them on Sundays) to see if there are any new debuts, where my favourite songs are charting, etc.

I reckon the year’s biggest surprise was Mr Brightside by The Killers - a song released nearly two decades ago that initially debuted on the ARIA Charts on 26/12/2004 and spent nearly three months in the top 50 in the first quarter of 2005. It re-entered the top 50 in the week of 15/12/2017 - two weeks after Jack Riewoldt performed the song with the band at that year’s AFL Grand Final.

This year it re-entered the top 50 in the week starting 16/1/2022, at its peak position of #23. I reckon music executives must have Riewoldt to thank for its success this year!

What did Riewoldt have to do with it this year?

It’s been in the UK charts for about 300 weeks or something all up.

It probably was just slammed a lot at New Year parties and the like, rather than being Jack Reiwoldt four and a bit year’s on.

So nothing remotely to do with Jack then.
