In Australia, Supergirl debuted at No.3 at the box office with A$2.43 million, behind Toy Story 5 (A$6.18 million) and Minions & Monsters (A$3.36 million) which also debuted last week.
Seems like the superhero bubble has burst. There are just too many same same movies being made.
In comparison, you have low budget movies with original ideas smashing box office records. Obsession cost $750,000 and has now made over $370million worldwide.

Great win for a local distributor too. Rialto got the film in Australia and New Zealand before Universal/Focus took almost every other territory.
Speaking of Obsession, art director Sally Choi is doubling down on her complaint about the low pay she had received while working on the production in different roles.

How Gen Z are fuelling a record-breaking box office boom for Australian cinemas
Streaming was meant to kill the cinema – instead, Australia’s industry has recorded three consecutive $100m months for the first time ever, with Gen Z driving the box office boom, bringing the movie theatre back to life.
I find weird how the media constantly focuses on how a generation is doing something “extraordinary”. This is like the third time in the last few years that I have seen a story declaring that Gen Z is the generation watching a lot of movies at the cinema.
But hasn’t it always been the younger generation that went to the movies? Maybe there were a few years when Millennials overtook them slightly because of Covid and then the way movies were being released by streaming services. But now they’ve all just adjusted back to normal behaviour.
The live-action remake of Moana went straight to the top of Australian box office with just under $6 million. Toy Story 5 was not far behind with $5.1 million, both titles benefitting from school holidays across Australia.
However, Moana flopped in America last weekend with only US$43 million on its opening week, and earned US$95 million worldwide.
Not unexpected. They have to realise that they need to stop flogging the same horse. We had Moana and the Moana 2 came out just over a year ago. Too soon to remake Moana again.

People are getting jack of Disney’s lack of originality, reliance on sequels and remaking movies that were only a few years old to begin with.
The only good thing coming out of Disney is Super Troopers 3. And that’s because its Super Troopers.
