I saw new Hong Kong police thriller Cold War 1994 at Hoyts Melbourne Central this afternoon. This is a prequel to the two Cold War movies from a decade ago, and has Aidan Gillen (Peaky Blinder, Game of Thrones) and Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey) among the guest stars. I could not believe that a computer generated Ansett Australia plane appeared in one of the key scenes. You can see it in the international trailer at the 1:48 mark. I knew that Ansett flew from Sydney to Hong Kong from 1994 to 2001 but only on a Boeing 747. The plane shown in the trailer looks like a 737 or 767.

Ansett was the only actual airline shown in the movie. Cathay Pacific and British Airways were given alternate names as Pacific Airways and Royal Union Airlines respectively.

A lot of excitement on Brisbane morning radio today with residents reporting the movie Honeymoon With Harry is filming this morning in Laurel Ave Chelmer.

Event Cinemas at Australia Fair to close after three decades

A Gold Coast shopping centre “stuck in the 2000s” has taken another hit as a popular cinema switches off its projectors and closes after three decades.

Event Cinemas at Australia Fair made the shock announcement to its Cinebuzz members on Tuesday, stating that the final screening would be on May 24.

“After many wonderful years bringing movie magic to the big screen, we are sad to announce that Event Cinemas Australia Fair will be closing its doors,” a statement said.

The cinemas closed in March last year after the centre was damaged by Cyclone Alfred and reopened three months later.

It marks the end of three decades of Event Cinemas – formerly BCC (Birch Carroll and Coyle) cinema – screening at the broadwater shopping centre.

Australia Fair centre manager Ramon Otten said they were finalising a deal to keep the cinema experience at the centre.
