It was a night of several firsts for 2023, with perhaps, The Prince Harry interview numbers holding the most interest. Seven took out the night convincingly with a combination of a dominant news service, the return of Home and Away plus Harry: The Interview.

To start the night, Seven’s news service was 200,000 ahead of Nine. Home and Away’s somewhat early season premiere averaged 519,000 to be second at 7pm. That compares to 2022’s premiere that had 533,000 at the end of January. Harry The Interview managed 487,000, which was a winner for the night but perhaps disappointing compared to the last tell all interview with Oprah.

Over on multichannel 7Mate, BBL unsurprisingly recorded its lowest audience of the year. It, however, gave 7Mate a 5.7% share

Nine took out second place with News and ACA making the top 10 while RBT managed 315,000.

10 saw the return of The Project’s weekday edition, last night featuring the 60 Minutes Prince Harry interview. That saw the show manage 327,000 for the 7pm segment after the 6.30pm portion made a rare appearance in the top 20. Then followed the much advertising 10th season of The Bachelors Australia. The show could only manage around 300,000 in total people to be fourth at 7.30pm. That is the lowest ever launch for a series that has traditionally commenced much later in the year on Wednesdays. Last season’s premier launched to 482,000. However, the episode did manage to make the top 5 in all key demos.

For ABC, 7.30 was back. That followed ABC News winning the 7pm time slot. Back Roads that followed again disappointed with 363,000 well down on previous season’s results.

The Bachelors starts with a whimper. It’s going to struggle this season. They can’t complain about the lead-in either. They went down from the higher rating The Project.

Terrible launch for The Bachelors. I was over the show before it even begun with all the constant advertising 2 times every ad break.

Any numbers on Studio 10 and Midday @TV.Cynic ?

Was the wrong strategy. Celebrity did very well starting Jan 2/3 last year and won its time slot. The Bachelors is shit and the franchise is dead here in Australia. 10 gave up a week of decent ratings by not going with celebrity and now they’re stuck with this lemon for the next three weeks before they can air survivor. Unfortunately survivor despite its quality will be overwhelmed by 7/9 and 10 only have themselves to blame with this shit strategy they have.

Moderate ratings for the two interviews with Prince Harry, first on 10 then on Seven.

The new season of The Bachelor got off to a poor start in overnight figures. However, it’s BVOD and timeshifting which will tell the true story.

The BBL topped the multichannels.

Were the figures for The Bachelor aided by The Project running over by about eight minutes?

No change to preliminary numbers advised so far.

Not at this stage.

Sunrise was 60k ahead of Today that beat News Breakfast by 20k.

Here is what 10 said about last night.

Network 10 (10 + 10 Bold + 10 Peach + 10 Shake):

  • #2 network in under 50s and 16 to 39s.
  • 10: #1 channel in 16 to 39s.
  • 10: #2 channel in under 50s and 25 to 54s.

The Project 7pm (featuring Prince Harry: The Exclusive US Interview):

  • #2 in its timeslot in 25 to 54s and 16 to 39s.

The Bachelors Australia Launch:

  • #1 show in 16 to 39s.
  • #1 entertainment show in under 50s, 25 to 54s and 18 to 49s.
  • #2 in its timeslot.
  • #1 in its timeslot in under 50s, 25 to 54s and 16 to 39s.
  • Lifts 10’s timeslot 207% in 16 to 39s week-on-week, 67% in under 50s and 48% in 25 to 54s.

The demo top five suggest a very young skewing audience for The Bachelors.

Pretty good numbers for the Harry interview but there is definite fatigue on this topic. The Oprah interview benefits from being the first we heard from them… since then you only need to go online to hear more.

Terrible launch for The Bachelors. Surely won’t see the return of the franchise.

I think that’s about the best that 10 could hope for with The Bachelors. Running a series that has been in the can for a while outside of the ratings period of both last and this year and getting the number one show in 16-39 and top entertainment show in the others. Remembering the show will do well in BVOD; reported to be about 100k for the first night.

Guessing it was close in Brisbane again going by the numbers listed for Sunrise.

I think the scheduling was a mistake. It should have run last year but they committed themselves to The Real Love Boat, which had to run when it did. If they ran together, there would have been a clash with The Bachelors being in the same genre.

Now, they are going to have Survivor and I’m A Celebrity running together and these shows have similar elements. This may result in viewer fatigue for both programs.

Looks like everyone is putting the boot into Channel Ten lol.

Someone said those figures are the best they could hope for. That’s because the Network has very low standards

They just announced a team of local writers in a “10-week full-time paid program in all facets of the script department and development process”. So sounds like they’re in the development phase. Check out the NCIS thread for more details.

Time for a new Head of Content? I mean she has nearly done 20 years in the role. You could not find a network on earth that is more desperate for a new head of content.

Why are 10 so invested in her? Bizarre.
