They just keep falling in ratings lately
NRL will have another record breaking season ratings for Nine anyways…
While 10’s schedule looks to be on life support, there’s a slightly different picture when you look at the key demos for today as an example.
Survivor is always known as a demo beast and last night it beat Idol nationally and quite easily in the metro markets in the key demos.
It’s interesting to look at the broadcast demos from last night (for the metros that I have). 10 comes out ahead of Seven in 25-54 and 16-39. Which is almost miraculous when you consider the whole prime time schedule in total people term. Seven News - 1 million ahead of News+ and DOND; H and A 600k ahead of Millionaire; Idol 300k ahead of Survivor. Plus the multi channels- Seven with one extra potentially targeting younger audiences. Yet somehow in 16-54 10 had more watching broadcast TV.
Of coure Nine is on another planet with almost 1/2 the demo audience.

So to borrow that term, 10 is winning the “audience that matter”.
Which one is it then? 7mate targets men 16-54, 7two targets all, 7flix & 7Bravo target women 16-54.

I had a feeling this season was going to be a bit of a bomb. The obvious thing was the dumping of Jonathan but I also think that the promo campaign for this season was poor. The ‘Redemption’ theme is just not that captivating. People are also sick of the same contestants constantly returning, especially when we just had a returnee season (Aus vs World). Also factor in that Aus vs The World only just finished up a few months ago, you definitely risk oversaturating a format having it on twice in a year. These 24 cast seasons just feel so long.

10 will not broaden their audience until they get a major sport. They need to get the NRL. They’ll need to offer $500m-$1b more than any one else bidding to be even considered.
Poor 10. Survivor’s premiere didn’t do that well (in total numbers). And their early schedule didn’t do that well either - even with the well publicised Hot Seat big win.
But they do have some “good hope” later in the night, winning the Late News battle over ABC (and SBS), and has done so for the last few weeks. However… Nine’s Late News returns tonight after a break from the Australian Open (tennis) and the Winter Olympics. So will see how that battles out…

Obviously one night isn’t a trend. If Australian Survivor’s numbers don’t improve though, I’m not sure why there would be sympathy for 10 when they decided to not only unceremoniously get rid of a well-liked and popular presenter but fail to mount the argument as to why the change was required.

MAFS picked up almost 700k in consolidated; Idol 234k, Survivor just 91k - not much need to watch the original when there were plenty of encores available. .
