Monday saw the launch of Seven’s new reality offering Million Dollar Island and despite a dream lead-in on a public holiday the show failed to impress and by 7.30pm was fourth in its timeslot.

Seven’s night got off to a huge start with 1.2 million watching news including 460,000 in Melbourne, both record audiences for this year. The 5-city result is the biggest news audience since August 2021. When 7pm came, though 60% switched off with Million Dollar Island just on 400k. In Melbourne, the switch off was 70%. Earlier in the afternoon AFL did 559,000 with the Big Freeze on 480,000. Both were up on 2022 numbers of 563,000 and 423,000.

Over at Nine, Nine News did well to post its highest rated weekday bulletin of the year while A Current Affair was over 700k for an easy timeslot win. The second Monday episode of Parent Guidance lost 65,000 from the previous week while still The Summit had managed on Mondays. That helped Nine take out the night main channel and network.

Meanwhile 10 was on top from 7.30 onwards with MasterChef up 80k week-on-week to win the timeslot while Have You Been Paying Attention? was also a winner despite dropping 70k week-on-week. In 25-54, MasterChef was 6th, Parental Guidance 8th and Million Dollar Island 9th.

ABC’s factual line up was down slightly across the board on recent results with Australian Story the best after 8pm, down 10k.

Matt Shirvington’s first Sunrise episode was an easy 65k winner over Today.

Even with the news as the lead-in, Seven was not unable to repeat what Farmer Wants a Wife achieved two months ago, with Million Dollar Island 3rd or 4th in the timeslot.

The pay TV audience for the AFL was also up on last year’s 236,000.

This is the show’s lowest audience since September 26 last year when it got 506,000. Maybe it was due to the contestant line-up? Or increased competition?

We knew Million Dollar Island was going to flop and it did. The only way from here is down.

Will be interesting to see if Q&A can crack the Top 30, otherwise its very embarassing for the ABC.

The audience appears to drop off like flies after Media Watch

MDI was 4th in its timeslot but not that far behind the others in reality, based on numbers. 7 would’ve hoped for better though.
Hot Seat and ACA providing good lead ins and outs for 9News in Brisbane.

Not really, Masterchef was 511,000 but Million Dollar Island was 409,000.

I’d say, the drop off from 1,210,000/1,110,000 for Seven News to 409,000 was the worst thing.

Really shows how difficult it is to launch new product in the current market. No wonder they all lean so heavily on shows that have been around before or for a long time. Intrigued to see where MDI lands but not very far to fall based on overnights.

I think that’s just FTA in general. These days numbers drop well and truly by that time of night no matter what the show is. But Q&A has its own issues.

MDI and Farmer would have mostly different demos, so makes sense for them to hold the older audience for Farmer from the news, which it did.
MDI might’ve fared better following the younger lead in of Home and Away and getting those demos.

I guess the main focus will be on regional probably pushing it into first.

Doubt is because Home and Away’s demos for last Monday were half of what Seven News got last night.

Was the gap any different yesterday with Shirvo’s first day? It was a normal work day in Brisbane.

Pretty close to the same as the previous Monday.

Supposedly Brisbane is about to become a focus, so let’s see how that looks and if it shows any improvement in ratings.

Why do networks continue to persist with shows like MDI?

I think everyone on here said it was a dead duck from the start.

I watched a bit, seemed a bit fake/producer orchestrated.

What’s the alternative? Dramas don’t work. More news shows?

My thoughts

I think one main thing is to look like an original concept - not like a copy of Survivor for MDI and Summit or Lego Masters for Blow Up.

Second easy thing to do is have shorter episodes - 90 minutes for every episode is too much especially with all the padding we are seeing.

Also - fill the timeslot with the program - not ads, promos, news breaks etc. The actual runtime for MDI was 1 hour and 5 minutes (incl recaps) - so way too many breaks.

But otherwise, both Million Dollar Island and Million Dollar Mountain both seem to have significant format faults. Probably going off topic to discuss here, but has been mentioned that the biggest part of MDI relies on people voluntarily leaving seems really odd.
