I guess the suggestion was you just have that time be part of Today, making more out of your salaries.
Except the suggestion was also coupled with an 8:30 finish, so you are getting exactly the same from the salaries.
My suggestion is based on reduced on air production costs, possibly reduce the cost of some jobs, because surely not all roles at Nine are full time, some will be part time, some wi be casual, some staff may be able to be multo-skilled to take on extra responsibility..
Also, even though it was said its more back of house staff, could an exit by Karl Stefanovic, be a position not technically replaced, but filled by existing staff?
Donât understand how shortening Today to end at 8.30 would make enough of a saving to make it worth while.
Over a 12 month period it would help. There is talk of 100 roles being condensed into 9 roles. The company needs to save $100 million, but there is no way axing 91 behind the scenes roles will do this.
By operating shorter hours or having shorter work hours, it has the potential to reduce costs. Back when I was working in retail, As an example, Woolworths changed replenishment finish time to 11pm because the rate of pay was structured like this:
7am til 6pm mon to Friday ordinary time
6pm til 11pm Monday to Friday ordinary time plus 25 percent
11pm til 7am ordinary time plus 50 percent
Casual rates add 25 percent to the above.
I didnt include weekends, this was just to illustrate my example. The other option of a 6am til 9am show could reduce penalty rates. Less hours of work, less hours of production and fewer people doing more work will reduce operational costs at the network.
Another example, back when Nine went into administration, National Nine Morning News at 11:30am was axed to cut costs - replaced by WIN with repeats of Happy Days initially. Also why did 10 move the news from midday to 1pm? Answer reducing operational costs.
Changing schedules, routines etc can reduce costs. Also reduced salaries of on air staff could lead to the presenters arguing for less on air time. The suggestion of a repeat of Tipping Point Australia is to ensure Australian content quotas between 6am and midnight is maintained. As 10 have shown, there is a possibility that the commercial networks are moving back to overnight mode until 6am which is why a 6am til 9am-ish show might happen with Today Extra to follow.
You canât have the same people doing 6-7 hours of live content. You still need two teams for both shows.
9 Morning news has always been on air? Moved from 11 to 11.30 at some stage.
I just donât see how cutting Today back to 8.30 would achieve that? Producers and crew are still there for the morning. Back to 6am would be more likely.
Obviously not, but there are still people who would be on more than one show such as possibly floor managers. Some will do part days, some will do full days, some will be full time, others part time or casuals. It depends on how the network is using them.
Over the years, National Nine Morning News has been aired at 10:30am, 11:00am and 11:30am.
Here is a link to a Melbourne schedule in 1990 on @TelevisionAU 's site proving National Nine Morning News was not in the schedule in early 1990
I mean comparing things to 1990 is a bit redundant to be honest. And when I say itâs always been on air, I mean in terms of recent memory, I know it wasnât on air in 1965.
Cutting a few staff back by an hour or so isnât going to be the money saver theyâre after anyway.
Or Nine can get rid of the Afternoon News, and replace it with The Nanny and Bewitched ![]()
@SA_TV didnt you see the government advertising on fuel? EVERY BIT COUNTS.
Nine will look at anything and everything to reduce costs by $100 million, every opportunity will be explored to eliminate waste and indulgence

So youâre reducing the more popular Late News and expanding the less popular News +?
10 News would lead in to 10 News+. It would depend upon the events of the day. 10 News would be live and 10 News+ would be pre-recorded earlier in the evening and be screened on delay. This hour package would be a work in progress. It would depend on numbers that the later time produced. 9:30pm is too early for late news
In that case, just axe News +, the Late News is currently an hour anyway. ![]()
Local quota.
News is easiest to produce, so whatever they axe they must replace IIRC
The quota requirements is why I have repeat Australian Dramas at 11:30pm. I would investigate the possibility of reintroducing a 11:30am bulletin
Itâs a shame that 10 are having the bare minimum of local quota requirements as it is during the week. With all the US Game Shows, Bold and the Beautiful, and the Late Show (and soon The Big Bang Theory), etc.
10 has given up completely on the 6am-1pm slots. Would classic Aussie Dramas work at 12pm in the lead up to the 1pm News? Or repeats of Beauty and the Beast? Heck, even classic Ready Steady Cook might work. And move the local cooking shows to an earlier slot, as they dont seem to rate at all these days.
As much as I would like to see a morning show return to 10, I really canât see it happening anytime soon.
I would like to see âNick Jr on 10â (or something to that extent) from 5am - 10am
Basically just kids content but would it be worth a shot? IMO, anything is better than whatever is currently shownâŚ
