Mock Schedules

I think drop the + from the 6pm edition and screen it as 10 News. A half hour national bulletin with Hugh Rimiton 4 days a week and Ursula for 3 days. Then work on your weekend mornings.

On Sundays from 8:30am, Hugh could host a Meet The Press style show and Ursula a Sunday style show (or vice versa) with a revival of Newsweek to finish the morning off

On Saturdays from 8:30am, a 2 hour sportsworld/WWOS style show (under the name Sportscentral or Sportscentre 10), and possibly revive Bright Ideas or something similar, just make sure its not ovetrun by paid segments.

Video Hits could then be revived starting at 6am both days.

I’ve been keeping an eye on the primetime ABC schedule and how the late news nowadays is no longer at a consistent timeslot for most of the networks.

I want to see if I can schedule the week to have a consistent late news timeslot. I think having a set time would help people who arrive home later and miss the 7pm news time to sit and catch up on the day’s news.

Mock ABC schedule for the week commencing Sunday 5th October – Trying to have a consistent late news slot

Sunday 5 October
7:30pm The Assembly: Ray Martin
8:15pm Mystery Road: Origin
9:05pm The Following Events Are Based On Lies Correspondent Series Premiere
10:05pm Mother & Son Rpt
10:30pm ABC Late News Weekend (replay the bulletin that went to air on News Channel at 10pm or keep Mariam Saab on air to read the news at 10:30pm for ABC TV)
11:00pm Movie: Love And Other Catastrophes
12:15am rage

Monday 6 October
7:30pm 7.30
8:00pm Australian Story
8:30pm Four Corners
9:20pm Media Watch
9:35pm Planet America
10:05pm If You’re Listening Rpt (Give Matt Bevan an extra 3 minutes on top of his usual 22 mins so it finishes at 10:30pm. I don’t understand why this show is currently scheduled for Wednesday nights)
10:30pm ABC Late News
10:45pm The Business
11:00pm A Life In Ten Pictures: Ella Fitzgerald Rpt
11:55am Grand Designs: Peak District Rpt

Tuesday 7 October
7:30pm 7.30
8:00pm I Was Actually There: Black Saturday Bushfires Season 2 Premiere
8:30pm Take 5 With Zan Rowe: Jarvis Cocker
9:00pm Change Slim & I to an arts dodo that is exactly 1.5 hours. Something like Namatjira Project or Whiteley (both on iview atm)
10:30pm ABC Late News
10:45pm The Business
11:00pm Media Watch Rpt
11:15pm Four Corners Rpt
12:00am Labor In Power: Taxing Times Rpt

Wednesday 8 October
7:30pm 7.30
8:00pm Hard Quiz
8:30pm Mother And Son: The Scam S02 E03 (why do they commission 25-minute shows? throws everything off)
8:55pm Triple J Like a Version (play 5-minute set from the previous week’s Like a Version)
9:00pm Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont Spelling Bee (NZ): That’s Not a Spelling, This is a Spelling Rpt
9:45pm The Assembly Rpt
10:30pm ABC Late News
10:45pm The Business Rpt

10:30pm ABC Late News
10:45pm The Business Rpt
11:00pm Grand Designs: Aylesbury Vale Rpt
11:50pm Long Lost Family Rpt
12:38am rage

Friday 10 October
7:30pm Gardening Australia Spring: Topiary Tips & Native Orchids
8:30pm Professor T: The Family
9:15pm I think a 45-minute UK talk show could work here (Maybe Jonathan Ross?)
10:00pm Hard Quiz Rpt
10:30pm ABC Late News
10:45pm Close of Business Rpt

11:00pm rage Guest Programmer

Overall, after making this, I found there to be way too many primetime repeats on the air at the moment. They seriously need to acquire some stuff or create cheap programming for:

  • After 9pm on tuesdays
  • After Grand Designs (9:15pm onwards) on Thursdays
  • After Professor T (9:15pm onwards) on Fridays
  • After 8:30pm on Saturdays (Currently replaying old eps of Return to Paradise)

That is really poor form to just have repeats on after 9pm. :grimacing:

I agree its poor form to have repeats after 9pm, so why did you do it on your mock schedules? Fridays and Saturdays is slightly logical, but not earlier in the week

Commissioning 25 minute shows is potentially for international sales of the show to either commercial or non commercial entities. Its a better outcome than a 22 minute show. Back in the day a 25 minute show gave the option for a 5 minute ABC Newsbreak. That could be another reason

Fair point, I started doing it but it veered too much away from my initial focus which was making the 10:30 slot a hard timeslot for late news. I wanted to see if I could do smaller tweaks without changing too much of the current slate and it’s clearly possible!

If I had to come up with after 9pm ideas, I would definitely put in international acquisitions in that slot and if the abc wanted some Australian content, I think bringing back some original arts content like book club and the movie show would be a good start. We’re also in dire need of original music programming but I don’t think The Set was

I looked at what original content the CBC does recently and saw they have a show dedicated to short films. The ABC could be doing stuff like that.

I think post 9pm is the place to be experimental and creative, it’s a shame they are instead replaying mother and son and Mystery road the times a week instead.

The problem is people dont like timeslot changes and are used to certain types of shows at different times. As an example, where is Q and A? And why is Planet America at 9:30pm Mondays?

My point is people prefer consistency

Q&A was cancelled months ago

that’s its current timeslot (9.35pm)

Get rid of the 1pm lunchtime news, keep the 3:30 news or move it to 4pm and then nighttime do this:

5:00: 10 News CityName

6:00: Deal or No Deal

6:30: Millionaire Hot Seat

7:00: 10 News CityName

7:30: Primetime programmes

10:00: 10 News CityName

10:30: US Dramas etc

Same news teams across all three editions, daytime news updates handled by whoever is hosting the 3:30 news, any major breaking stories inside the city, use a senior reporter on hand or bring the anchor in early if possible. Focus all your resources on primetime. Promote the station with a tag like “More Local News Than Anyone Else”.

Live local updates throughout the night promoting the late bulletin.

Dream AFL TV Rights Deal:

Seven - All regular season matches and all final matches live in HD on main channel and on 7Mate in VIC, SA and WA with viewers in QLD, NSW and ACT being able to see all regular season matches and all final matches all live in HD only on 7Mate and SD on 7Two. Grand Final also live in HD on main channel exclusively across all states and territories and Brownlow medal count exclusively live on 7Mate across all states and territories

Fox - All regular season matches and 8 out of 9 finals matches live across all states and territories using own network graphics (I.E. scoreboards etc.) and personnel.

Reasons behind this is because all three commercial networks have simulcasted Fox’s Coverage of AFL Matches across WA and SA since 2002.

I love this! At least every show gets its own moment. And, a very smart move to have Deal at 7pm. 10 wouldn’t lose out in any way, so if they wanted to keep their ratings-flopping news program i.e 10 News+ albeit shrunk to 1/2 hour and then still had room for 2 game shows and then reality time from 7:30pm onwards, that’s perfect. :+1:

TVNZ 1 Primetime schedule if it had an ABC style taxpayer funded model if it was chosen under Clark Government public service broadcast reforms in 2005.

Here Today’s schedules would have looked like
6.00am TVNZ Breakfast
9.00am 1 News Mornings
10.00am Chasing Utopia (repeat)
11.30am Anika Moa Unleashed (repeat)
12.00pm 1 News Midday
1.00pm Emmerdale
1.20pm Midsomer Murders (repeat)
2.50pm Loading Docs (repeat)
3.00pm Grand Designs New Zealand (repeat)
4.00pm Te Karere
4.30pm The Chase
5.15pm The Tamati Rimene-Sproat Show
6.00pm 1 News At Six
6.30pm Regional News: Top Half (Auckland/Upper North Island), Today Tonight (Wellington/Central), The Mainland Touch (Christchurch/Canterbury), The South Tonight (Dunedin/Southern)
7.00pm Close Up
7.30pm Fair Go
8.00pm Attitude
8.30pm NZ Stories
9.00pm Media Spy
9.30pm Mozart: Rise Of A Genius
10.30pm 1 News Tonight
11.00pm Business Update
11.10pm Killing Sherlock: Lucy Worsley on the Case of Conan Doyle (repeat)
12.10am You Have Been Scammed
12.40am Old Movies
2.50am Old Movies
4.30am Death In Paradise (repeat)
5.30am Close Up (repeat)

This channel would have to focus on niche content to put ratings lower than the current state of TVNZ 1 is nowadays heavily commercially driven for ratings. I think that regional news they had in the 1980s would need to be brought back to cater regional stories that matter to them.

10 used to do really well at 7pm when they had their reality shows starting at 7pm. I think it’s time 10 went back to that.

7.00 Ryan Bridge
7.30 Dogs Behaving Very Badly New Zealand
8.30 Googlebox New Zealand (revival)
9.30 Married at First Sight UK
10.30 Nightline
11.00 Sports Tonight
11.15 FBI: Most Wanted (encore)
12.15 Informercials

My take on Three’s Thursday night would be a New Zealand version of Dogs Behaving Very Badly that Graeme Hall would likely to host to help out Kiwi families who have their dogs poorly behaved and they would wished they brought back Googlebox New Zealand

Little idea I had for a way 7 in Perth could utilise their programs, the live programs from Sydney, and content from the West Australian + News Updates into a rolling news and info channel. Have done a summer and winter version.

The Blue is shows as the appear on 7 Perth, the Orange is live programs from 7 Sydney, while the Pink would just be rolling clips, latest updates, and text info from The West Australia, plus any live events. Grey is Repeats, and bold is live programs. Hope that makes sense….
