If ABC had a stronger run of Australian comedies on Wednesday nights including Ceclia Pacquolaâs having her own variety show that has a similar tone to Thank God You Are Here that aired on Network 10.
ABC TV
7.00pm ABC News
7.30pm 7.30
8.00pm Hard Quiz
8.30pm Shaun Micallefâs Eve of Destruction
9.00pm Mother & Son
9.30pm Fisk
10.00pm Celia Pacquolaâs Comedy Variety Showcase
10.30pm ABC News Late
I would love one of the networks to produce a comedy along the lines of Hey Dad! but be a single mother trying to balance home life and running a small business. There would be opportunities for misunderstandings and misjudgments. Julie McGregor might be a good possibility for the single mother role (or someone similar in nature). I know the whole Hey Dad! concept could be a little tarnished but I think if its only loosely based on it, it could work for ABC
Bit of a left-field idea, what if 10 did something similar to how Nine broadcasts Riverfire and cover the Pacific Airshow that happens on the GC in August? Certainly seems like a decently sized event from the past two years.
They could do:
Friday (on 10)
9am Pacific Airshow: Morning
1pm 10 News First Lunchtime
2pm Pacific Airshow: Afternoon
3.30pm 10 News First Afternoons
4pm Neighbours
4.30pm Bold & The Beautiful
5pm 10 News First
6pm Regular Schedule
Friday (on BOLD)
1pm Pacific Airshow: Afternoon
3pm Regular Programs
3.30pm Pacific Airshow: Afternoon 2
5pm Regular Programs
Saturday (on 10)
9am Pacific Airshow: Mornings
12pm Pacific Airshow: Afternoons
3pm Pacific Airshow: Afternoons 2
5pm 10 News First Saturday
Sundays (on 10)
9am Pacific Airshow: Mornings
12pm Pacific Airshow: Afternoons
3pm Pacific Airshow: Afternoons 2
5pm 10 News First Sunday
Or, alternatively, an hour highlight package on BOLD (maybe on 10 if they really wanted to)
Could rate better than the filler programs (Judge Judy repeats anyone? )
Was thinking about the possibility of 10 maybe dumping The Project from the evening line-up and what that would possible look like moving forward so came up with a couple of options below.
Weeknights 1
5:00pm 10 News First with Hugh Riminton
5:30pm 10 News First (local state editions)
6:30pm Deal or No Deal
7:00pm Primetime Lineup
8:00pm Primetime Lineup
9:00pm Comedy Panel Show
10:00pm 10 Late News
10:30pm The Daily Show
11:30pm The Late Show with Stephen Colbert
12:30pm AfterMidnight
Weeknights 2
5:00pm 10 News First with Hugh Riminton
5:30pm Deal or No Deal
6:00pm 10 News First (local state editions)
7:00pm Primetime Lineup
8:30pm Primetime Lineup
9:30pm Comedy Panel Show
10:30pm 10 Late News
11:00pm The Daily Show
12:00pm The Late Show with Stephen Colbert
1:00am AfterMidnight
Fundamentally I think they need to start with getting their early local bulletins on later to try increase viewership as 5pm is quite early for people nowadays. Either move it forward 30 mins to 5:30pm, or fuck it, if you canât beat them join them at 6pm - wonât be any better or worse than it is in that slot now.
But the worst thing they could do is abandon that 5pm slot altogether as Seven & Nine would somehow pounce, cue a national bulletin at 5pm with Hugh (or someone in Sydney, but with a decent profile) which could replace Afternoons which feels a bit wasted where it is.
DOND can live either after local news or sandwiched between, but get it out of 6pm when people switch on for news - you want people already locked on something or tuning in for the same thing IMO. Thereâs trying to be different / offering an alternative and then thereâs repeatedly doing the same thing and getting average results every time - at least they have a pretty decent no bullshit product with news.
Get Roving to re-tool a comedy panel show for 9pm ish which could be recorded earlier in the evening like 7/8pm and then it can be edited, roast the news, but donât have headlines, feature stories etc. I know they tried this with This Week Live, but re-tool it for a new audience and their standards are much lower now lol.
Will also be a good lead-in to 10 Late News which needs a more consistent slot and lead-in.
Less reliance on producerals in primetime from the US on the main channel, which could be P+ exclusives and get a second window on Bold. Take advantage of Comedy Central leaving Fetch and slot in Daily Show / After Midnight to the late schedule to fill that out a little.
If I was really dreaming here, Iâd get Sarah & Waleed to do a consistent 2 hour rolling hard news bulletin in the mornings outta Melbourne with more of a political, national outlook than the fluffy commerical rivals and let it grow.
Maybe they could even do it as a co-production with SBS to increase its reach and share the costs, call it Good Morning Australia? Theyâve worked together on stuff before, could both put resources in. Do it on the cheap without much promotion as it would generate a lot of headlines by itself.
If I was at 10, this is what iâd be thinking to refresh things.
Saturday Nights on Ten
6:00pm Wheel Of Fortune Aus/Family Feud Aus/Who Wants To Be A Millionaire Aus repeats
7:00pm Who Wants To Be A Millionaire UK/Wheel Of Fortune UK/Family Fortunes UK (based on Family Feud)
8:00pm Ambulance
9:10pm The Graham Norton Show
10:15pm Rove Tonight
11:30pm Googlebox/Have You Been Paying Attention/other light entertainment
In addition to the above I would extend reality shows to 2 hours on Sunday (if they arent already that long) and 90 minutes Monday to Wednesday with a all new gameshow hour 7:30pm til 8:30pm Thursdays and Love It Or List It 7:30pm Fridays.
Acknowledging some reality shows need an extra night or two, the all new game shows could air at 8pm Saturdays whilst shows like Big Brother and Im A Celeb airs. Celebrity game show specials could air on weeks when shows like Survivor are on
reality shows take up too much airtime as it is. I donât think there is any appetite for 90 minute/2hour programming blocks on a nightly basis. The networks would love it because theyâd just fill up the extra time with more fluff but itâs a bore and a big commitment to ask of viewers.
The alternative is to just drop a night for the realities because Thursday nights probably dont rate that well. The only reason I thought extend out is based on trying to get back to fitting shows into half hour start/finish times through the week.
Back before aggregation, I used to think how untidy it looked shows ending/starting at 9:25pm, 10:20pm 11:15pm etc on regular weekly shows. Movies it made more sense with to me
That would require Seven to either forfeit the rights or let them simply lapse.
I donât think the ITV version worked as well as 10 were hoping it would on Fridays.
Hosted by Gino DâAcampo? After his recent controversy? No thanks
Letâs âBring Back Saturday Nightâ again and have some Saturday Night Rove, shall we? It worked âso wellâ last time, didnât it? And the âPilot Weekâ concept produced some really âfantasticâ programs tooâmaybe that deserves another go as well?
Rove with his old pals Hamish Andy,Ryan Shelton,Peter Heliar and Carrie Bickmore can do Bickmore from the Newsdesk pretend itâs 2008?
These were examples of game shows they could use AND not set in stone (as obviously they would need to secure the rights to any programs they air). Also the repeats of game shows and these could be reversed in the 6pm til 8pm slot.
As for the Rove idea, Ten need to do something with Rove - either his own thing OR move The Project to 4pm week days from next year (assuming the 3:30pm News is retained) and create a new vehicle for Waleed and Sarah. The Project could maintain the Friday format Rove plus 2 panelists across 5 days a week.
