Not a good survey for Nineâs talk back stations with bad timing for the pending sale. 2GB dethroned in Sydney by Smooth dropping 2.6 points with Smooth up 1.6 to number one with 13.0. Gold up 0.8 closing in on 3AW in Melbourne that was down 0.8 hanging onto a 0.8 lead. And in Brisbane 4BC loses another 1.0 to 5.1, behind 4QR. 6PR steady in Perth.
Top of the table remains tight in Brisbane with MMM improving its lead over Nova to 0.9 then KIIS improves to equal B105 with both just marginally ahead of 4BH.
Christian OâConnell finished 2025 with the No.1 FM breakfast show in Melbourne, despite slipping 0.2 from the previous survey. Fifi, Fev and Nick shed 1.5 to drop below Nova, Smooth and even ABC Melbourne.
Still in Melbourne, Kyle and Jackie O dropped 0.5 to finish the survey year with 5% share.
Triple Mâs Rush Hour made the biggest gain in drive (up 1.6) but Gold stayed on top in the timeslot.

Looking & then calculating the following demo figure, the âOther AM/FMâ share on among the 55-64s is at a whopping 20.3% in that market!
Iâd imagine a fair number of them in that demo would be listening to River 94.9 from Ipswich, as well as 92.1 The Breeze from Beaudesert, and a number of community radio stations around Brisbane, such as 99.7 Bridge FM, Bay FM 100.3, 101(.1)FM and 101.5 FM.
Of note: Smooth/Sydney - 13.0 is the largest share in the stationâs history and matches the largest for any FM in the market since 2002 (KIIS also reached a 13.0 in S3/2023) Gold/Melbourne - 13.3 is the largest share for the station since S1/1993 and largest for any FM in the market since S3/2010 (Fox - 13.5)
Sydney - Iâm guessing Wollongong and Campbelltown would make up the lions share, with the rest being community radio.
Brisbane - it would most likely be The Breeze and River 94.9 followed by Rebel and the Sunshine Coast stations (Hot 91 / Mix / Sea), followed by the community stations.
Adelaide - Power FM and Fresh FM for the lions share ?
Perth - Wave and Coast ?
Melbourne - Geelong / Ballarat and the community stations?
Yes I suspect thatâs about right, although I think some community stations like 101, Bridge and Bay FM also have a reasonable audience.
I think River would be the biggest chunk though, followed by Breeze. I find it baffling that ARN havenât put River on DAB in Brisbane, but they could be waiting to merge it with Gold now thatâs on DAB as Gold 94.9/DAB
Basically, Brisbane is missing the Gold station on FM and the numbers have always reflected that. Even when 973 had a broader playlist it still didnât fill the need. Brisbane is really down one FM station due to the quirks of the FM auction that fell through. Had the missed sale gone through 4BH would likely be a Gold analogue FM.
Apart from Breeze and River, the community stations do a good job of catering to that market and have good signals across the metro area.
I suspect Hope pulls a decent audience. Contemporary Christian does quite well in markets of all types across the US, and across the Tasman, Life FM was up to a record 3.1 share in Aucklandâs most recent survey. Many who may not define themselves as religious will listen to the format and embrace its âpositivityâ more so than its message.
I was reading the wrap up of this survey on The Age and I love how this was buried at the bottom of the article:
ABC Radio Melbourne finished the year on a 6.5 per cent share, marginally up 0.2 percentage points on the previous survey, with breakfast duo Sharnelle Vella and Bob Murphy ending the year on a high of 7.8 per cent.
I remember when they first started and the papers were more than happy to announce it to the city how much of a flop the breakfast duo was. Looking forward to seeing how Nine will cover Nine Radio stations once they sell them offâŚ.
