ABC finishes 2023 on top of digital live streaming
ABC continues to be #1 in digital live streaming in GfK survey 8, recording a 26% share of live streaming. The ABC has held the number 1 position since it became a standalone GfK measure in survey 3 earlier this year.
The ABC’s internal measures recorded a total of 6.5M live and on demand streams across ABC platforms over the survey period.
This survey also saw ABC Adelaide audiences tune in to farewell Peter Goers who hung up his mic in November after 20 years as presenter of Evenings. The station had a strong survey across the board with Evenings a clear standout, jumping from a 7.7% share to 12.4%.
The result on digital live streaming follows our first appearance on the Triton Australian Podcast Ranker where the ABC debuted as the number 3 Australian podcast publisher with 33 of our titles appearing in the top 200 ranked podcasts for November.
ABC Head of Audio Ben Latimer said: “I’m proud to see the ABC finish the year reaching 4.9 million people per week across our linear network and reaching millions more as the unchallenged number 1 live streaming network.”
“The local radio teams and I are excited about the line ups for 2024. We’re investing more in our local radio network than we have in years starting with a coordinated brand campaign across the ABC over summer.”

Together, the Triple M and Hit networks have achieved consistent and unmatched results in 10+ all people share nationally, outperforming their rivals over the past 12 months, as listeners can’t get enough of the networks’ much-loved content, music and talent.

SCA Chief Content Officer, Dave Cameron, said: “Today SCA ends a spectacular year with three FM number ones in five metro markets. The last time we achieved this was 2013, so today is our best result in a decade. The ratings highlight the undeniable power of the Hit and Triple M networks working together to drive incredible leadership results. Again today, SCA also remains the number one network share 10+ nationally.
“In addition, the Triple M Network is the only Australian FM radio network to deliver two outright number one results today. Today’s dominant results continue to be powered by local number one FM breakfast shows in Melbourne with The Fox’s, Fifi, Fev & Nick extending their lead, and in Adelaide with Triple M’s Roo Ditts & Loz with a large leadership gap. Carrie and Tommy have also achieved their highest cume audience ever today.
“We’re very confident and excited that the momentum building around Triple M Sydney’s Mick & MG in Breakfast, combined with the return of Marty Sheargold on Triple M Melbourne Breakfast, will propel both of these stations into a successful 2024 and add to the huge success the national Triple M Network is enjoying as 2023’s
growth darling of the radio industry.“With the Hit Network continuing to win 25-54 women and the Triple M Network winning 25-54 men nationally, and the lion’s share of number one radio stations in metro markets, plus Australia’s number one podcast on LiSTNR for a record run with Hamish & Andy, it is testament to our incredible people that continue to work together in SCA’s fully integrated audio content business that is driving uncontested leadership results across the audio industry.”

Is it a good idea to call it a duopoly?
That has always had negative connotations in business when companies dominate and eradicate competition.
Yeah I’m actually not sure duopoly is the right term. A duopoly normally refers when two companies control an entire market for example.
Or for example in a regional town with only two stations that were both owned by the one company, that could be termed a duopoly. But not were a company owns 2 stations out of 6.
And usually regarded as bad as a monopoly.
When they allowed these mergers of radio stations or two licences in the same city, they always gave assurances that it wouldn’t hurt competitors.
A duopoly can have more than 2 competitors, it means that 2 dominate the majority of the market. For example we call the supermarkets a duopoly with Coles and Woolies, but there’s also other players.
I think duopoly is exactly the word they are looking for, even if it is a bit of a stretch. These media releases are aimed at advertisers, specifically agencies. They want to give the agencies the picture that SCA dominate the market and there is no point advertising with any of their competitors.
