Actually, I just realised, there would have been no traffic reports (from the chopper) on Melbourne TV today?
As Essendon Airport is ATN’s studios & hanger.
They would have been done from the VicRoads TMC.
This is a truly horrible event. Scariest part for me is that I live about at 10 minute drive from where the crash happened.
Condolences to all the families who lost loved ones.
Essendon Airport will reopen tomorrow morning. DFO will remain closed for the time being
It has been a truly tragic incident. My heart also goes out to all the families who lost loved ones in this tragedy.
3AW did have a tweet shortly after 9am saying (paraphrasing) “Reports an Air Ambulance has crashed at Essendon airport” - but it was deleted (as were many tweets by Melbourne media outlets) soon after it became apparent it wasn’t an air ambulance.
Channel 9 even had to edit their post after 10 minutes. Again, not an attack on any media outlet - because pretty much every outlet said “reports” which was taken from 3AW reporting.
Saw the NBC Nightly News report on NBC News website and noticed it used the footage as exclusively shown on Ten Eyewitness News yesterday. It did not mention if any clips were provided by Seven (given the two networks still have a news supply agreement).
That is exactly what it means.
Melbourne’s traffic reporters regularly use “reports of a collision in…”.
Meaning a call has come through to emergency services or VicRoads, but no dispatches/not confirmed.
He did the right thing
Media Watch should cover social media reporting
Thanks for that Bunkerroom - I wasn’t aware of the deleted tweet, appreciate the update.
To me, I take a tweet or online story that starts with ‘Reports’ or similar is meaning the don’t have confirmation as yet, however a lot of the tweets weren’t going out with that phrase or similiar and I would expect a large number of people were assuming that there had been confirmation that an Air Ambulance was involved.
Finally got the chance to post caps I got of the extended Seven Morning News that ran from 11am to 12.30pm on the day:
