Yes. That’s one thing.

Do we need a public holiday to celebrate the monarch’s birthday for that? It’s not even her birthday now. It’s only “celebrated” on this day because it was close to her grandfather’s birthday.

Which is why we stop for two minutes of silence. The grand shame is this has been whittled down a a minute and often just a “moment’s” silence because apparently people can’t stop for just two minutes anymore. Having worked in customer service roles I’ve seen the abuse hurled at frontline staff for pausing at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month from the impatient amongst us.

Probably not, but it is a tradition. It’s a nod to our links to the monarchy and should probably stay as long as we’re part of it.

Please be wary of who you tell on MS to “pull out your pole” :joy:

It’s probably been said before, but personally I think public holidays like the Queen’s Birthday and Labor Day should be standardised across the country if we’re going to keep them. Either way, having the Queen’s Birthday PH on the 2nd Monday in Winter is just stupid when it’s usually too cold for most places to take full advantage of at that time of year.

Labor Day in NSW on the first Monday of October works beautifully because in recent years, it’s been the day after the NRL Grand Final and (most years anyway) the start of Daylight Saving. Arguably an unofficial start to Summer as far as the weather is concerned too.

I’d definitely prefer it if Remembrance Day became a national public holiday over Melbourne Cup Day (which if I’m not mistaken, has been called to be made a national public holiday in recent years).

Having said that, I wouldn’t want Remembrance Day to become as commercialised as ANZAC Day has in recent years.

Which being New Years Day, is technically already a public holiday?

QLD had the Queen’s Birthday on October since 2012. Back in my days, All states and territories had the Queen’s Birthday on 2nd Monday of June (except Western Australia where they already had the Foundation Day, known as WA Day HOliday). Foundation Day has changed to WA Day HOliday in 2012 because of the law changes recognising Aboriginal Australians as the original inhabitants of Western Australia. Queen’s Birthday was celebrated in late SEptember or early October in Western Australia. There was one occasion that the Queen’s Birthday was shunted to the last Friday of October in WA due to the CHOGM in Perth in 2011.

Having two public holidays in June in Western Australia will cause a lot of debate.

Federation Day can be celebrated on 2 January to give us an extra long break.

Well that’s a pretend local holiday that should be abolished.

All local and state holidays should be abolished in favour of one Federation Day.

Imagine having a New Year’s Day on Saturday, and Federation Day on Sunday, this will mean that there will be a New Year’s Holiday on Monday 3 Jan and Federation Day on 4 Jan (Tuesday).

Excellent. Just like Christmas and Boxing Day, the week before.

This is the ideal time to have Public Holidays because it’s the quietest time of the year and there would be less interruptions.

I’m only advocating this day to replace all the state and local holidays throughout the year.

Indigenous Day could be created by abolishing all the Picnic Days that most workplaces still have but is taken at different times throughout the year.

Queens Birthday can be replaced by Republic Day when that happens soon.

I’d rather have public holidays spaced out during the year. Also, there doesn’t have to be a reason for a public holiday. Just make them bank holidays like the UK.

Back in 1999, Australia had a referendum choosing either MOnarchy or Republic. Most of the votes went to Monarchy.
Imagine having a referendum again on either Monarchy or Republic. this will spark a lot of debate. If many Australians vote for Republic, the Queen’s Birthday will be abolished. The Australian Government will have colossal changes to the system.

Sort of. In reality, the referendum was a vote on a contentious model for a republic - where a president would be chosen by two-thirds majority of parliament, rather than elected directly by the people. Dissident republicans who preferred the later model also campaigned for the ‘no’ vote, so it is disingenuous to simplify the vote to republicans against monarchists.

Incorrect. The referendum was a yes or no vote for a particular model of a republic. Please don’t try and rewrite history.

I think we should replace the Queens Birthday with a day all about me. ECC Day. What you do think?

I thought you already had a day: Halloween. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

No, fuck no. How the hell did Australia get sucked into celebrating that crap?

At least ECC Day would be Australian. :joy::joy::joy:

It would make me cranky

Nah it won’t. See also: the month’s of December, January & April.

Most West Australian’s actually want another public holiday, so I don’t think there would be many opposed apart from business owners

Curious to know what date you are proposing for this?

And I agree with @OnAir , there are too many public holidays in the first half of the year, meaning after today, for many states (like here in NSW), there is only one more public holiday before Christmas! (which is still over 6 months away  ].
