Since 2007, could have been earlier but was browsing since the change from the dots to the square ch9 logo , only thing I still can remember posting back in the very early days was the WIN buyout of STW and the watermarks that followed!
I did cap quite a bit when I had a tv card in my PC but since presentation is identical between states now and all centralised, not much point nowadays.
2002 for me. I remember reading on here about the retirement of Ian Henderson from 9 News like 2 days before it became public. There used to be a lot of inside info back in the day. One of the promo guys from Ch7 used to give inside scoops on his work, can’t remember the username though.
I remember the “password-gate” scandal… Where a Channel 7 insider leaked an internal 7 website password on this forum which caused them to lose their job i think?
Think there’s a few reasons for that - people are more careful about their identities online/their contracts prohibit it but also there’s less intel to share. Idents etc don’t really exist anymore, news relaunches are fewer and far between too.
There used to be quite a few industry insiders here. There still are but most of them keep a low profile now for the reasons @OnAir mentioned.
I once got a PM from a Seven Sydney operations tech who wanted to call me to discuss the compression I was using on my videos since I always posted HQ video at decent sizes for the time. These were the days before YouTube, when ADSL connections were still new, hosting was expensive and people didn’t have huge ass hard drives like we do now, so file size was important but I also didn’t want to sacrifice quality either.
Anyway this particular tech wanted to know if it was possible to use this compression with some of their OB equipment since bandwidth is important for that. In addition they were looking for improved error correction as well.
What was this magic compression and format? All of my uploads at the time were RealMedia Variable Bitrate (.rmvb) files. I’m not sure how he didn’t pick that up since it was literally there in the name of every file I posted As far as I am aware there was no broadcast equipment that supported rmvb at the time and even if there was support for it the format had way too much overhead, so any live broadcast would have had huge delays. Plus the error correction he was after just wasn’t there. It just wouldn’t have worked.
The poor guy was disappointed he wasn’t able to use it, but was still amazed at the quality vs file size. The part I enjoyed the most was the video that got his attention was a Seven ident that he filmed. He was happy that his work was being shared and thanked me for posting it.
Although it served me well I am glad that the Real Media format in general died off. Their software was… not good, to put it nicely. I definitely don’t miss it.
Had some great fun (yeah, okay, I have no life ) looking at the old site on the wayback machine last night. What stuck out to me was how many people on here now were here 15-20 years ago! (@OnAir, @damian, @KICK-IT to name just three)
Some really fascinating insider posts, too - one highlight being from John Gatfield, spilling the tea
(is that what the kids say? ) after he was sacked from Sky News. (I think that one may have made a couple of headlines)
Anyway a wonderful website - here’s to the next 15-20 years!
Just as an aside, I love this place. I love the relaxed atmosphere, I love how friendly everyone here is… I know we have our arguments and disagreements, like any group of people (and I’ll throw my hands up, I’ve gotten into my fair share of stoushes here, for which I apologise).
On the whole, though, it’s a really nice, welcoming forum. It’s a big contrast to some other forums, which can be quite uptight about what can be discussed and what people are allowed to say. You don’t get much of that here, and when someone does overstep the line (which hardly ever happens anyway) the mods deal with it quickly and respectfully.
Anyway that’s enough gushing for one century Thanks, mods, and long live Media Spy!
