From ABC
Tim Bowden
ABC Managing Director David Anderson has paid tribute to former radio and television broadcaster and author Tim Bowden, who has died aged 87.
Many Australians will be saddened to hear Tim has died. He was for several decades one of our pre-eminent journalists and broadcasters, a storyteller whose curiosity for the world around him was valued by so many of our audiences.
Tim was a correspondent based in Asia and North America during the turbulence of the 1960s and helped Australians understand the overseas events that were having such an impact on Australia and our neighbours in the region. Tim was part of the generation of ABC journalists who brought those events and their meaning into Australian homes every night.
In 1969 Tim was the first executive producer of the radio current affairs program PM, before becoming a producer with the ground-breaking television current affairs program This Day Tonight.
In 1975 Tim joined the ABCâs Radio Drama and Features Department and began making radio documentaries. In the mid-1980s he set up Radio Nationalâs Social History Unit and presented radio documentary and feature programs, Talking History and Thatâs History.
Tim was perhaps best known as the host of much-loved ABC TV program Backchat from 1986 â 1994 and for his amazing documentaries on Australian research in the Antarctic that produced footage still seen today. He received an Order of Australia for services to public broadcasting in June 1994.
Tim was part of the fabric of the ABC for decades and made a huge contribution to the national public broadcaster and to the nation. He was generous to his colleagues and was known as much for his sense of humour as his passion for journalism and the ABC.
Our condolences go to Timâs family and many friends and colleagues.
Former Melbourne Lord Mayor Ivan Deveson passed away last Saturday (August 31), aged 90. Deveson, who served as Lord Mayor from 1996 to 1999, was also a businessman and was Seven Network chairman from 1991 to 1995.
aged 90 I believe - thought it seemed a bit odd being a Mayor and 7 Network chairman prior to being born.
Sorry I was meant to say 90. That was a big typo.
Initial autopsies of four of the seven victims who died when a superyacht sank in a storm in Italy last month show they died of âdry drowningâ, according to authorities.
The phenomenon, also known as âatypical drowningâ, means they had no water in their lungs, tracheas or stomachs, said a spokesperson for the lawyer of the captain of the Bayesian, which went down off the coast of the Sicilian port of Porticello on August 19.
A terrible tragedy. Is this being reported in Australia?
Canât find anything on ABC News online
Have seen it on sports sites here
This was one of the top stories on BBC News.
Yes - I was referring to how it wasnât on the ABC site
Yes. I understand that. Iâm just saying this is a big story being reported on European news channels but I saw nothing on Australian news sites.
And it seems itâs not being reported in Australian news broadcasts, which are probably too busy reporting local house fires and car accidents to cover international issues.
Sadly Australians donât really care about international events unless it involves big names like world known celebrities, the royal family or US political leaders (which really has only gained interest here since Trump).
We hardly get decent updates on Ukraine etc.
I just think we are so far removed physically from the world like we live in our own bubble.
Here on the east, even in our national day time bulletins, we hardly get news from Perth!
Just the way it is.
Yeah. Thatâs another big story here in Europe. Iâve seen protests happening in Germany, Denmark and Finland. So many buildings are flying Ukrainian flags alongside national flags in countries Iâve visited. Especially Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
National Gallery of Victoria director Tony Ellwood married his long-time partner Tom Mosby last weekend. Mosby competed in the first season of MasterChef Australia in 2009, and is now the CEO of the Koorie Heritage Trust.
