Going off some now outdated experience, but generally agree with what @BendigoTV and @Radiohead said. Ballarat aerials from the analogue days still persist in some parts, though are rarer these days. You generally need elevation and good LOS to the northwest - Highton, Bell Post Hill and Leopold/parts of the Bellarine work well (seemed to work as well at a former WIN TV newsreader’s house on the top of the hill in Newtown too).
I can’t recall ever seeing a Bendigo TV install in Geelong, the distance and the ranges in between generally kill any quality signal that far south. And Colac TV (or FM) really doesn’t make it any further east than Mt Moriac, somewhat intentionally I suspect.
I have seen UHF installations for Latrobe Valley TV along the coastal reaches - Ocean Grove, Point Lonsdale and Torquay certainly had some. The mostly-water path in those parts is of great assistance. And with some tropo enhancement about, Latrobe Valley DTV can still be received not infrequently on standard Melbourne-facing antennas in Geelong itself (at least the ones that still have UHF components).
Yes that was my experience with 106.3 MIXX FM, I recall there is a long gradual descent east of Winchelsea on the Princes Hwy where 106.3 would fade away heading towards Geelong, and would be gone completely by Geelong. I was more likely to hear Flow FM from the Yarra Ranges after that.
Yep, where I am, I am receiving Flow FM more than MIXX FM. Do you know if MIXX FM will perhaps install some form of repeater in the Geelong area for listeners there to listen to MIXX FM? I know an app exists, but I reckon maybe there should be a repeater in the area. Cheers.
Apparently, parts of Highton, mostly the Barrabool Hills Shopping Centre there, can receive MIXX FM Colac very clearly, providing you have a good FM antenna and you’re in a very good spot. If your car has a good antenna system, it should automatically pick up the station. But in some minor cases, bits of Flow FM can also be received.
Residents wishing to listen to MIXX FM but not through online platforms will need to travel up there (and be in a perfect spot) in order to receive the 106.3 FM signal without issues. But you need to be near the shopping centre in order to get it at good coverage level.
I have 2 very clear recordings - received via long-distance from that shopping centre, I’ll share those shortly. They are commercial breaks.
I should also note that there have been a few Geelong ads on the station, ads (and some sponsors) for Chery Geelong, Geelong Gaol, and even The Gordon. And yes, those Harvey Norman Waurn Ponds ads are also making their way onto the station. I have some recordings of ad breaks containing some of these commercials, both locally in Colac and from Geelong on long-distance. If you want to hear them, I’ll happily post them here in this thread.
If MIXX FM is not licensed to serve Geelong, how are these ads being broadcast onto the station? Sure, the advertisers are paying for these spots, but they already have bay93.9 and Krock 95.5 to do that on. Unless they’re choosing to advertise outside of the Geelong license area and into neighbouring markets like Colac. Even the Yellow Pages coverage area for advertising spots in their phone books stretches out to Colac and surrounding areas.
A lot of Colac and Colac area residents come into Geelong as the nearest big(ger) city to shop, work, do business etc - it’s only an hour down the road, and the train links them quite well too.
But we’re certainly way off topic for long distance television now, so I’ll leave my reply at that.
It would be impossible these days to DX DTV from New Zealand as they are all on UHF and that can only go so far. Plus the UHF transmissions there arw highly directional and of a much lower power than what we have here. Your only way to watch NZ TV is via streaming and a VPN.
I’ve tried to watch TVNZ+ using a VPN, created an account with them and all, and TV1, TV2 and TVNZ Duke aren’t working, even with the VPN location set to NZ. Any fixes?
I use the KODI app that works on android TV using an nVidia shield. From memory, there’s instructions on how to do it here New Zealand IPTV & EPG Files
ThreeNow doesn’t work either, even with the VPN country set to NZ. The only closest FTA NZ channel that does officially work on their service is HGTV, part of the Three network, owned by Warner Bros Discovery. Otherwise you’ve got some of their other streaming-only channels.
I think you’ll find 99% of free VPNs aren’t going to work on streaming services. They’re the first ones to get flagged.
But anyway, this is straying very far off topic.
