Long distance television

Speaking of Gippsland - In August 2000 GLV8 moved to UHF 37 to prepare for GTV digital to launch on VHF 8 in Melbourne.

It meant there was clear air on VHF 8 between August 2000 and January 2001 (when digital TV launched) and I was able to receive Mount Gambier SES8 in Gippsland. It was very snowy but I was able to identify it was SES8 which I think by then might have had WIN branding.

True. SBS 93.1, Classic 105.9 and JJJ 107.5 can be received as far east as Bairnsdale in my experience.

Yeah, I’ve had 107.5 JJJ on the car radio in central Bairnsdale in relatively flat conditions before. Even Bairnsdale is (or was) home to some rather large VHF TV masts which would have received Melbourne TV back in the day.

I was just wanting to ask a question does anyone live In the Mt Macedon area of Victoria & what TV can they recieve?.

According to mySwitch, it receives a moderate signal strength from Melbourne.

Also, weak reception of Ballarat and a whiff of Shepparton in parts. Nothing from Bendigo though, seems to be in a blackspot for that. I love looking at Myswitch for that.

Isn’t mySwitch outdated a bit. I mean the channels are old on there.

Yes the channels are old, but the reception won’t have changed… The missing bit might be if there are any new transmitters that haven’t been included.

I don’t think this website has been updated in a long time.

I recall a 2nd TX site was installed for Stroud NSW Hunter Valley a couple of years ago, i just checked MySwitch and it’s not listed on there, so I think you’re right there too.

In 1956-1961 if you wanted TV in Bendigo you had to go 15m+ with a large antenna array to get Melb TV. Some of these remnants exist in town.

After 1962 many people in town had BTV-6 antennas (probably about 30% of houses), but it was hard to get HSV-7 and GTV-9 due to BCV-8 wiping out the signal. It was possible to get those channels with a notch filter and masthead amp in some areas - just. Very expensive systems.

ATV-0 was easier to get from 1965-1980 and quite a few people received this.

In some locations GMV-6 was stronger than BTV-6 (NE side of town).

I’m pretty sure the Government & ACMA abandoned the MySwitch web site after the completion of the digital channel re-stack.
ACMA still reference it if you’re having reception difficulties, but it’s not updated & hasn’t been for a long time, it only continues to exist as a archived reference site so to speak. Any new transmission sites that have been built after the channel re-stack completion or that have had major changes won’t be on there.

As a local @Radiohead you’ll note that the Merewether translator on MySwitch web site details it being at Mosbri Cres. NBN studios but it was moved to the Strzelecki lookout at The Hill/Bar Beach a few years ago after the NBN studios & land was sold off for redevelopment.

SES 8 had the WIN branding since October 1999, but kept the 8 watermark on the top right hand corner of the screen until August 2001.

Is it directional? Is the main power not southwards but perhaps more west or likely north?

Hang on, wasn’t BTV Ballarat and GMV Shepparton partners and then same ownership?

400km regularly for Lakes Entrance as a mostly a water path. Signals travel better across water, especially TV signals. That’s why Mt Barrow received in Vic.

That was definitely the case with analogue, not so sure about digital as i hear some residents on the Bellarine Peninsula east of Geelong have trouble with Melbourne DTV reception.

one downside to Channel 10 not being broadcast in Mildura anymore, one of the more prominent DX signals that show up in Renmark is now a no-go. Unless 10 makes a comeback in that region soon

Correct.

Part of the problem on the Bellarine Peninsula (especially around Drysdale and Newcomb) is FM harmonics from the powerful 50kW+ K-Rock/Bay-FM transmitters nearby. Without an FM-trap, the Band III Mt Dandenong TV signals are toast.

They do have a TV transmitter at Geelong with the power being at 4kw.
