Long distance television

Understandable if the cricket was in Sydney, as TCN9 weren’t allowed to broadcast the full day’s play, except in the case of a sell out.

Perhaps they simply got a better signal from Knights Hill than from Artarmon or Kings Cross. Even now there are pockets of the eastern suburbs where this is the case.

A couple more recent examples.

Back in 2015, when the following channel was still a Nine affiliate, a cafe in Campbelltown had WIN on. Likewise at McDonalds in Emu Plains that same year.

Back in around 2008, a hotel lobby in the Darlinghurst side of Sydney CBD had WIN on.

The Penrith Valley is another spot where Knights Hill is stronger than Artarmon in some cases; likewise in the Macarthur (as you’d know).

I do recall a cafe in Katoomba having Prime on; this was probably in the mid 90s. From my recollection, the signal was a little snowy so it could have even been from Mount Canobolas. Most in the Blue Mountains prefer to watch the Sydney channels; when I stayed at the Hydro Majestic a year ago there were no regionals scanned in. It was the same at a guesthouse in Blackheath (2016).

Yeah, I had the exact same experience myself when I stayed at a motel in Blackheath back in 2011. Only the Sydney channels were scanned into the TV.

Just speaking of long distance reception of Sydney TV though, I can remember staying in a cabin accommodation in Lithgow back in 2008 and the Sydney channels were available there on analogue. The picture was a bit snowy from what I remember, but it was decent enough to be able to watch . What’s interesting though is the fact that the digital stations from Sydney don’t make it to as far as Lithgow. I’ve stayed at Lithgow three times this year and the only channels scanned into the TVs were the Central West ones.

That would be a combination of two things

  1. The “digital cliff” effect whereby it’s “all or nothing”, the latter being what Lithgow would probably get most of the time (as Myswitch doesn’t give Sydney as an option)…
  2. That since aggregation, TV channel choice is very similar for Central West to that of Sydney.

That use be the case thru the early 90’s. I use to live on the Outer suburbs of Melbourne and use love come 3pm when the idiotic blackout happend that I could change to Win Gippsland and watch the cricket(In the early days with a bit of pixelation but approved over time with technology.

I remember doing a simalar thing with Melbourne storm games and State of ORigin game when they were Live on Win but Delayed because a idiotic GTV9 Programming Department

some very extreme heat on the way next week for parts of S.A, 50 degrees are a strong possibility. Will be interesting to see what effects this heat and blocking high will have on TV and radio patterns

Heat itself isn’t the cause of favourable transmiiting conditions.

Particularly if there are hot westerly / north westerly winds involved.

Little bit of Adelaide this morning in Renmark, does smoke haze enhance signals at all as it’s a rather hazy morning?

Nope.

Not per se, but it can be an indication of a strong temperature inversion (which does produce tropo). Radio signals- and smoke- get trapped beneath the inversion layer.

Nine Melbourne (VHF 8) is booming into Mount Gambier tonight. 8/10 signal quality as well as strength.

That’s a great get!

Do you normally get the West VIC stations from Mt Dundas too?

Yes, that’s right. The Mt Dundas stations are received perfectly most of the time.

This time last year I was getting signals that were actually watchable.
