I never listen to KIX, so the reception difference took me by surprise as well! It’s possible that KIX are broadcasting at a reduced power. I don’t know how far out KIX on 105.3 goes, but I know up at Bowral, the 101.1 Nowra signal can be received quite well.
That makes sense with the Sydney reception, Albion park area is not good for Sydney fm.
Also on the car radio in Albion park I have had Eagle fm, there is one spot where there is a gap in the escarpment where the signal can be received ok on a car radio.
RE Kix they definitely are below strength. I can receive permanent VOX at my location in NW Sydney, but unless I have strong tropo from the south I am unable to receive Kix. The last time with tropo Vox had full RDS, KIX was just above the noise floor.
My hunch is Kix would probably be around 200W ERP considering 2PNN on 93.3 is 500W, and broadcasts from the same tower at Brokers Nose based on your reception in this video.

@Laoma if at Bermagui, where’s the local Bega commercials & any others co located? The TX site is between Bermagui & Bega. Bizarre if can’t be received.
I am using a Tecsun and could not get Braidwood FM. I will try in the car in the next couple of days. Yes I missed 100.1. Thanks @dxnerd. I am sure in my car I might be able to get something. I checked the car and I could get 97.3 ABC Illawarra not as easy on the Tecsun. There is a very big hill/mountain that might be blocking it.
Your UNID 98.3 could be OKR FM Kilmore. They are also on 97.1 in Wallan but this would be well behind 3MDR in most of Melbourne. I’m sure the 97.1 translator cops a tonne of interference despite some terrain blockage between the Dandenong Ranges and Wallan.
There’s also 98.3 in Colac (3OCR) and that 3EL (Gold 1071) relay in Bendigo, but Kilmore is possibly the most likely. All of these stations stream so it’s a matter of getting the parallel.
That’s a good point, and I have often used the website’s stream to confirm it’s the correct station. Kilmore is closer but it’s not that station, it is 3OCR, so not a bad effort for low power from that distance.
RPP FM relay stream on 98.3 used to be the strongest not that long ago, but now I’m not even 100% sure it’s still there, maybe someone closer to Frankston can confirm.
And on the subject of 3MDR, they’ve been having some serious transmitter issues lately. With the lack of funds for community radio these days, it’s understandable that it’s not something they could fix overnight. Basically when it has an “episode” the audio will briefly overdeviate to as far as 97.5 or so.
Oof, that’s bad. 3MDR is quite a good station with professional presenters so this is a tad surprising. There’s often no correlation between the quality of presentation and quality of broadcast engineering, though.
I was tuned in on a Monday evening and it was rather entertaining and politically incorrect. The stuff you wouldn’t hear on commercial radio, or even most community radio stations these days.
In general even when the transmitter isn’t freaking out, it’s just way too loud, which might not be as audible on a radio with “very wide” receive, but it’s there. They’re not the only ones though, a few stations around town could do with backing off of the audio levels. Unless they have remote access, I’d say someone will need to physically visit the transmitter site and make adjustments. I’ve included a link to a recording from just now, so you hear what I’m hearing.
I recall from a trek last year it was something like a Classical or Eclectic mix or oldies, IIRC? It wasn’t IDing much.
Definitely was a narrowcast format.

BTW is 107.5 2DD Boambee an illegal transmission?
Nothing found on ACMA RRF.
I found it has a streaming appearance here:
