If I were ARN Iâd be looking at contracts closely and see if all his antics could lead to breach of contracts and get rid of him. Biggest contractual mistake ever in radio history.
Yes, Perth would be a good opportunity for ARN to flip 96FM to Gold 96.1, with Christian for breakfast and networked from Melbourne , with the same log, during the workday, drive and nights.
It would be a low cost format for them, with the same content as Gold 104.3 and Gold 101.7 and would be a point of difference from Triple M and Mix.
But theyâre not the KIIS format. Different music - more similar to Gold already. 96fm listeners would flip their lids if they had to listen to the crap thatâs currently being pumped out on 97.3 in Brisbane, which is the KIIS format.
I actually wonder what provisions there are in the contract for early exits and/or should there be a takeover of ARN.
I canât see SCA wanting K&J back unless it was just for 2DAY. Surely itâs been proven by now that the audience doesnât want them outside of Sydney.
Yes. 2Day wasnât willing to risk financial ruin by meeting their demands back when they jumped to KIIS. Their most recent contract has stetched ARN too far and the consequence is it is now hurting their bottom line.
Apart from all the staff they had to retrench to pay for their two âstarsâ, it is now hurting their performance and their profits. Seeing SCA and Nova attracting more ad revenue but spending less should be ringing alarm bells for ARN.
The owner of the KIIS and GOLD FM radio networks has fallen from 28% to 24% share of metro ad revenue, losing out to Southern Cross Austereo (owner of Triple M) with 32% and Nova Entertainment with 33%.
ARN severely overplayed their hand with this contract, clearly it was unaffordable and unsustainable without destroying their entire networks. Clearly SCA were smart to avoid them.
ARN really has a great network in GOLD with JAM and Christian and thatâs the future for them realistically.
With older audiences and Hot AC/AC the dominant format worldwide now, if they had focused their energy on those and gave K&JO a take it or leave it decent offer and kept KIIS stations running as was. Theyâd be in a much better long term situation. Turning every station outside Melbourne and Sydney into the Gold network would also help long term.
100%. If theyâd focused on a Gold FM network in all capitals, even skewing it a little younger then they would be in a great position. They could have persevered with KIIS on FM in SYD/MEL and on DAB in the other capitals and tried to build it slowly from there, either with or without K&J after making them a reasonable offer. They had other talent they could leverage for KIIS. They could also have built a 3rd national classic hits network using Cruise in Adelaide and DAB elsewhere and a 4th network based on The Edge.
And voila - 4 great and viable networks
Gold - AC/classic hits
KIIS - hot AC
Edge - CHR/urban
Cruise - oldies/classic hits
