Maybe there was truth in SCA/Craig Bruce’s comment about K&J not having another 10yrs in them.
This is the proof.

Here’s a thought for WHEN management pull the plug on K&J into Melbourne.
Along with a full rebrand of 101.1FM, perhaps hire “Matt and Jo” on a short-term (see out the year) contract.
Create a buzz that a well known Melbourne breakfast duo is back for a limited time only.
Hopefully pull back some numbers, then near the last month of the contract announce a new permanent breakfast show, and have that line-up ‘sit in’ with Matt and Jo for their last few weeks to held build their brand.
They could certainly just dump them to digital in the other cities, and let K&J go loose on KIIS Sydney again, not capping them to finish at 10am or trying to get them to tone down content - do that and for the rest just push their podcasts and maybe keep the syndicated hour of power.
I think they can get almost all the value in the other metros from streaming/digital than they would having them on FM.
The problem for ARN is they just wouldn’t have much cash to reinvent what’s left of their network - in Brisbane it’s obvious - just flip to the Gold network, get out of direct competition with Nova and B105 and climb up the ratings for being more music than Triple M and on FM rather than those who jumped to 4BH. Perth and Adelaide just need to do nothing, and that leaves Melbourne.
They’d need to spend to promote that they aren’t the K&J station anymore, while finding a name and format that has a gap in the market that doesn’t hurt Gold. Amusingly, something like what 2Day is doing to counter them in Sydney is probably the closest thing, and can be done on a presenter light model.
Taking on Triple M would be the best move but less blokey. Hughesy and Kate for breakfast, rockier hits from the 80’s to now.
Could still network Will & Woody, the breakfast show would be the cost but rest could be pretty low cost.
101.1 The Edge.
They probably eventually will but there has been zero official announcements at all. I’ll believe it when I see it.
i mean the signs have been there - the installation of Craig Huggins, adopting the “Just Great Songs” positioner, maybe it might be a fluke, and 96 will still be in a hybrid-KIIS state, but it definitely has the potential to move over fully to Gold.
It’s such a confused brand from a marketing perspective. They’ve tried to make KIIS the brand as much of a rock/Kiss the band kinda vibe here in Perth but 96fm is dying to be put properly in gold.
I’ve also been thinking, at what point in this climate would things get so bad that ATN just start a new network taking the best stations they have in each market and taking a consistent national but locally gap filling spot in the market?
A generic enough name that they can have slightly varied formats in each city, but maintaining a consistent name for national recognition and sales
A) It has been said many times before that the KIIS format is more profitable than the Gold format.
B) It would’ve been put this way in case ARN ever got its hands on 6iX FM.
Is KIIS only more profitable because of KJO though? Just thinking what else they have for them. They seem to be gradually flipping 96 at the moment suggesting they are losing faith.
Other than having a station already aligned as one network or the other?
I think the claim is that it generates more “revenue”. Profitability would have to take into account the gigantic cost of K&J. Revenue less that expense.
Gonna be real interesting when one of them dies and they’re forced to pull from other talent that are known to the people, which they’ve been building elsewh… oh.
Well that’s a shame. What’s that saying… Something about all your eggs in one basket?
And that’s what 2DayFM did. At least (hopefully) by then, 2Day1041 will have an established breakfast show and an established programming strategy (not rotating every 12-18mths).
Now is the time to build a station legacy, so that when the time comes for K&J to leave, the other station gets a go.
Sadly for 2Day, it’ll likely be Nova96.9 taking that crown.
I think 2day have a shot at success with this new format but I don’t think Jimmy and Nath are the right people to anchor it, nor are they currently doing anything to build momentum to at least claim some share back bit by bit.
I would be looking at the likes of Abby and Tyrone to embody the new format and to be able to effectively speak to the right audience. Jimmy and Nath would make a really great Triple M show though!
I don’t dislike Jimmy and Nath but I couldn’t help but feel like they were the next duo to get poorly parachuted into 2Day breakfast.
They rose through the ranks quite quickly and I’m glad they have been given a shot but it never felt like a great fit for 2Days ongoing breakfast problem.
It’s a shame that in the decade since they lost KJO they’ve fumbled it up so badly, letting some of the more promising shows find the axe way to early, and persisting with some variants for way too long.
How hard can it be to find some solid Sydney local talent with good chemistry? Not just reality show has beens but something really thought out and curated from the ground up
KIIS line up this week
6am-12pm Petho
12-3pm Kat Markey
3-4pm The Pick Up
4-6pm Will and Woody best bits
The only live shows at the moment on KIIS were the Pick Up and Zach and Dom
Around 9.20 this morning, I just happened to come across a discussion on KIIS 106.5 about the NRL and all the sin bins regarding high tackles that happened last weekend.
This surprised me in that 1. I didn’t think this was a topic of interest to their demos and 2. made me wonder if all breakfast content was generic to SYD/MEL or they switch out such city specific content like this.
Kyle’s comments came one day before survey 2 of 2025 metro ratings is released tomorrow morning.
Wonder what that will mean in terms of the $200 mil deal if they pull the pin on Melbourne?
Surely that would have signed on the assumption that the show would be successful in Melbourne (and probably other markets too)
