KIIS 1065 mpox comments breach decency standards
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has found comments made during a broadcast of the Kyle & Jackie O program about gay men and the mpox virus breached decency rules under the Commercial Radio Code of Practice.
An ACMA investigation found that the segment, which discussed the outbreak of mpox in Australia, included offensive comments by Kyle Sandilands that stereotyped gay men and assigned blame to them for the spread of the virus.
The ACMA found that the overall sentiment of the segment stereotyped gay men as irresponsible in regard to their sexual health, this made them the prime carriers of a virus that presented a danger to the community and, as a result, they were not deserving of sympathy or compassion.
ACMA Chair Nerida OâLoughlin said the comments were derisive and insulting and were not in keeping with standards of decency expected by the audience.
âWe acknowledge that the programâs audience does not expect the presentation style of either the program or the presenter to always be formal and nuanced,â Ms OâLoughlin said.
âAlthough there was a basis at the time for a public discussion about mpox that involved reference to gay sexuality, the segment went beyond any acceptable standards by conveying that gay men were irresponsible, were a risk to the community and did not deserve any sympathy even when presenting for medical assistance.â
âBroadcasters have a responsibility to maintain appropriate levels of decency, and in this case the comments by Mr Sandilands were overly disparaging and insulting.â
The broadcast pre-dated the findings in a separate ACMA investigation into the Kyle & Jackie O program that discussed the Tokyo Paralympics and was also found to have breached the Commercial Radio Code of Practice decency provisions.
Following that investigation, as part of a court-enforceable undertaking accepted by the ACMA, the licensee agreed to deliver sensitivity training to the program hosts, producers, censors and other relevant staff. The licensee must report back to the ACMA on its progress every six months for two years, with the next report due on 17 September 2023. The licensee will incorporate the findings from this most recent investigation into that training and reporting regime.

The ACMA is a joke.
Interesting article from Adelaide. Basically implying ARN are sabotaging Cruise to boost Mix.
After witnessing how they gleefully sold 4KQ and expected that to help 97.3, I can certainly believe it.
ARN just HATE it when their AM stations do too well and show up their underperforming FM stations. They would rather kill off the AM stations than work out how to fix the FM ones.
I wouldnât believe anything from the tabloids.
Did anybody catch Alan Jones on K&J this morning? If so, anything worth mentioning?
"Speaking on Fox FM on Monday morning, Fevola told listeners he had received a phone call from someone who works in the radio industry in Sydney.
âHe said, âYou might have competition next year. Someone in our city is now gonna be in Melbourne,ââ Fevola recalled. âKyle and Jackie!â
Fevola made his feelings known right away, insisting Kyle and Jackie O wouldnât work as a breakfast show in Melbourne.
This is just contract negotiations ploy. They even said they could go back to 2dayFM its just to seem like they have all these options so they get more money⌠Like they need anymore.
100%. theres no way in hell a national breakfast show will work. theres a reason why we get the best of christian oâconnell in brisbane and not the show live
I love the comment, âYou have to be in Melbourne to broadcast to Melbourne.â
Maybe the Fox team can jump into the studio next door and let Ed Kavalee know about this.
Or Mick Molloy.
Huh? Ed is in Melbourne broadcasting to Sydney. Wasnât the quote âyou have to be in Melbourne to broadcast to Melbourneâ?
Surely not. K&J on KIIS101.1 breakfast will tank harder than 2Day without K&J. The audience is completely different and the competition will go hard at letting the whole city know who is and isnât local.
If ARN are stupid enough to do it they deserve whatâs coming to them, especially now that theyâve finally got KIIS to the best position itâs been in for 25 years.
Probably would have a better chance of succeeding in Brisbane with the currently struggling Kiis 97.3, basically they would need to make River the Pure Gold station and modernise Kiis 97.3 to match Sydney and Melbourne.
Yes there would be three hot AC / CHR in the market then, but what they are currently doing with KIIS 97.3 is not working anyway.
KJO in Melbourne will not work, better to keep the existing show.
In Brisbane move the current kiis 97.3 Breakfast show to a relaunched River 94.9, and pipe KJO into KIIS 97.3 if they want to trail the show going national.
I donât think thatâs a good idea. If anything they should move 97.3 to Pure Gold, even if it skews a bit younger that Sydney and Melbourne.
K&J would tank just as much in Brisbane as they would in Melbourne.
River would only be an option if they put it on DAB in Brisbane, which they havenât done. The 94.9 signal is not what it once was into Brisbane. Iâm sure theyâve turned the power down.
I am guessing this is because most radio listening in analogue is through FM nowadays, and thus the FM stations are a higher priority.
AM was basically the loserâs frequency band ever since 1990.
Maybe ARN will launch a Kyle and Jackie O DAB and iHeart station? The show live nationally on there plus catch-up, best bits, producer shows etc like Howard100.
