“Take action!” Oahu emergency officials posted on social media. “Destructive tsunami waves expected.” https://t.co/zgjMLDErKR pic.twitter.com/Hv05M1e9G8
when Hawaii was on Tsunami alert after the Japan earthquake in 2011, my parents were in lockdown in a high rise hotel in Honolulu. Mum was watching one of the local channels which had rolling news coverage and I was watching it here at home at the same time. I think the channel might have been streaming on YouTube or something, I can’t recall.
Probably not remarkable in 2025 but in 2011 I guess it was a bit of a buzz that we could talk on the phone at opposite ends of the world while watching the same US TV channel in real time.
The first wave hit the Japanese coast - up to 60cm recorded - see travelling up a river. Further waves expected - warning up to up to 3 m, could be hours later.
The buoy at Midway Island recorded a 3 foot wave according to Hawaii Governor
First wave of tsunami expected to reach Hawaii at 3:10pm AEST .
Small waves can be seen in the bay according to commentary at Hanalei. Sun has just set. Not a lot to see yet.
Update: 1st wave was 1 foot. More waves to come.
Beaches empty.
Water receding about 100ft in Hanalei Bay as seen on TV coverage. Boats reported aground at Haleiwa caused concern but wave heights weren’t high. First wave was 1 foot, 2nd 3 ft amplitude (6ft top to bottom). Still another couple of hours to wait for all clear after waves clear the Big Island.
Later, water back in
US coverage that I was able to access was very poor compared to anything seen in Australia IMO. Very few reporters in the field, relying on publicly accessible webcams. Lots of guesswork, assumptions being made on little to no information that would never happen here ![]()

Some of the thumbnails used in the coverage have been OTT. Social media was almost immediately flooded with fake images and video of previous tsunamis/earthquakes etc.
What is frightening is that the middle photo is an actual (unedited) photo of a disaster that occurred in my country 14 years ago.
This photo was taken and provided by Mainichi Shimbun and Aflo (a photo company).
