Israel-Hamas War - Coverage Discussion

Yeah, all this stuff is pretty bad. Why it gets like that I have no idea.

Just on this, with respect to those European countries, they should rest in their hearts that an event like the Holocaust would be unlikely to occur ever again on that scale, even with the rise of right wing politics in that region due to a range of different issues. Why? Because nowadays the left wing (and far left) is about as populist and attention-seeking as the far right so we’re more likely to see some sort of conflict between them rather than against the general population specifically.

The issues in Palestine/Gaza on the other hand is bordering a crisis to that magnitude and I think it’s a bit rich for Israel to claim that any criticism of their acts in that area constitutes as ‘antisemitism’ when they should know very well what that experience is like to not inflict it onto Palestinians, yet here we are today.

And not to mention our news outlets falling for it hook line and sinker.

I’ve seen a few examples of some of the more extreme activists taunting Jewish and Zionist people as well, especially in universities. A couple of examples from Melbourne alone (I’ll acknowledge this was pretty easy to find given that I do agree there is a pro-Israel lens in our media).

Islamophobia definitely is underreported in our media but I wouldn’t use that fact to dismiss the attacks that have been felt in the Jewish community too from some of the more extreme Palestinian activists.

I think both are very true and there is a great deal of pain and hurt in our community right now from both sides of this horrid conflict.

As a university student I’ve definitely seen instances of this on campus this year in particular and I’m very annoyed and disgusted by some of their antics. And any attacks or targets on Jewish people for their ethnicity should absolutely be condemned.

Just wish there was some fairness in terms of looking at people from Muslim backgrounds who have been unfairly targeted by the Zionist Jews that mirror the exact horrific acts the Israeli government are doing to the people of Gaza, but apparently our news networks have no interest in it.

Absolutely agree, and I’d say the same for the reverse situation (of Zionist activists taunting Muslims like what appears to have really occurred in Amsterdam).

The media needs to play a much better role in cooling the temperature on this situation. At the moment the media seems to fan the flames and encourage further division if anything.

We might not be able to control what happens over there but if we can help our Jewish and Islamic communities here in Australia that are hurting start to find some common ground towards reconciling that would be a good first step.

Let’s hope for the sake of civilians that this ceasefire holds

That headline doesn’t seem accurate. Ceasefire and end of war are different things.

Al Jazeera, BBC, Sky are all doing rolling coverage of the ceasefire. What about CNN? Well when I tuned in they were talking about TikTok and Trump. at least now they’re covering it

Agree. Sky UK, BBC and ABC were great. So weird CNN had a reporter in London giving updates on the ceasefire. Really surprised they didn’t have a live reporter on the ground for the moment the ceasefire was due.

They did have a presenter (Jim Scuitto) there later on, from 6am Eastern time. But yes, their earlier coverage was very poor. I guess because their overwhelming focus these days is the domestic audience, and CNN International is little more than an afterthought. Sad.

Oh, and when domestic did start their coverage at 6am ET, they had a minute-long live hit with Scuitto in Tel Aviv, then spent the next five minutes talking about… the TikTok ban! Priorities… no wonder their ratings are in the toilet. I want to love CNN - they have some brilliant presenters and reporters, much more engaging than on other channels - but the management makes some utterly baffling decisions.
