Powerful speech
I would assume the networks have rostered on a breaking news crew for this weekend.
Will be interesting to see if they break into programming.
What for?
Possible ground invasion into Gaza beginning
Seems like this has really slipped to 3rd or 4th story pretty quickly. Surely the daily developments in Gaza are still more important that the local stabbing and house fire of the day.
Nope
Stuff at home should always trump ongoing international news.
A war on the other side of the planet doesn’t directly impact the majority of Australians. Unless there are major developments to report, local news wins out on the commercial news services. Those wanting more coverage can always tune into SBS News, BBC, CNN, MSNBC etc.
Also there is only so many times you can tell viewers an invasion / attack is imminent.
That has never been the benchmark, does a leaked video of a footballer doing drugs directly impact the lives of the majority of Australians? We accept that as a lead story. I’d argue the conflict does have an impact on Ausralian’s lives thru protests, race relations, political re-prioritisations, impacts on inflation, and family disputes.
Its the level of public interest that determines the story order, from my anecdotal experience, the level is high.
I think the interest is high when there are major developments. It has been headline for a couple of weeks but there haven’t really been major developments in the past week. Obviously, it still should be covered but until something big happens it doesn’t need to be headline every night on Australian news.
At the end of the day they are appealing to viewers and local news is of interest to people. Even from my own perspective, I was quite invested watching a lot of coverage on various news networks but in the past week I haven’t been as much as its getting fairly repetitive and only minor developments. I’m sure it will be back up the front soon if/when things escalates further.
Yes. Look at the huge ratings for AFL and NRL, a large section of the population follows these sports along with the narratives of their star players. Sports stars doing drugs is a huge headline story here and rightly so. The public interest for this sort of story is higher than a war in the Middle East unless there are major developments.
I noted that last week’s news ratings where this was a major story were down on the previous weeks and the equivalent week last year.
I think that sometimes a big news story is covered so much across the day and in other ways that when 6pm comes viewers don’t think there is anything more to hear.
I hope those journalists are safe.
I mean they’re in a warzone
No report today from JP Gonzo on 10. He’s probably taking a break after filing for three weeks. 10 instead crossed live to a CBS News correspondent.
The bravery of these journalists needs to be commended. David Woiwod was close to being in trouble in a recent live cross.
