David Beckham live on Invictus Games Today

Tonight at 8pm

ABC is excited to announce Invictus Games Sydney 2018 ambassador David Beckham will appear on Invictus Games Today tonight at 8pm on ABC and ABC iview.

We will catch up with Beckham at the athletics track to talk about his role as an Invictus Games Sydney 2018 ambassador, what the Invictus Games mean to him, and the importance of family and friends. As an ex-elite sportsman, we will chat to him about the power of sport for the competitors’ road to recovery.

David is one of the world’s most respected sporting champions. He is the first English football player to win league titles in four countries: England, Spain, the United States and France. He retired in May 2013 after a 20-year career, during which he won 19 major trophies.

Also, on tonight’s show, Dylan Alcott shows Dave Hughes a thing or two about wheelchair tennis, Lehmo heads to the archery, plus there’s a re-cap of the bone-crunching final of the wheelchair rugby.

Invictus Games Sydney 2018 Closing Ceremony.

Saturday 27 October at 7.30pm

Invictus Games Sydney 2018 competitors, their family and friends and a host of special guests will gather to celebrate the unconquered human spirit of our wounded warriors at the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 Closing Ceremony.

Performing for the audience, that will include TRH, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, will be an all-star line-up of international and local artists including Grammy nominated Aloe Blacc, Aria award-winning rock band Birds of Tokyo, Colin Hay, The Kingdom Choir, NAIDOC award-winner Chris Tamwoy, the Admiral’s Band and Drum Corps, Marliya from Spinefex Gum and Starley.

MC’d by ABC’s Kumi Taguchi and Nate Byrne, the Closing Ceremony of the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 will be broadcast live from Sydney Olympic Park on ABC TV and streamed live on iview and on ABC TV + iview’s social channels, for viewing around the world.

ABC’s coverage will be anchored by Chris Bath with co-host Anthony “Lehmo” Lehmann and Dylan Alcott, with Curtis McGrath joining them as military expert and commentator.

The Closing Ceremony will be a celebration of the triumphs and inspiring spirit of the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 competitors, as the Invictus Games flag is passed to the Dutch city of The Hague where the next Invictus Games will be staged in 2020.

ABC are currently airing “Wheelchair Basketball”, between USA and Netherlands. (gold medal match). Coverage began at 1pm aedt.

Is this the first time that live coverage is on the ABC?

ABC celebrates Invictus Games Sydney 2018 multi-platform success.

During the eight days of competition, ABC’s array of inspiring and heart-warming stories, and coverage of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, captured the hearts of Australians.

Michael Mason, Director- Regional and Local, said, “Australians have connected strongly with the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 during the past week, and the ABC has been central to that. Our ABC team has brought the stories of the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 competitors and their families to life over the past few months.

“In the past week of competition, we have brought audiences coverage of an unprecedented scale across the breadth of ABC digital and broadcast platforms – ABC TV, iview, radio, digital and social. It has been richly rewarding for the ABC to have worked on this event alongside so many inspiring people, and it has been equally rewarding to see how many Australians have enjoyed our coverage.”

  • The Opening Ceremony was the most watched non-news program on the night with an average audience of 640,000, delivering our strongest Saturday night primetime share since March 2017 of 14.8 per cent ;

  • Invictus Games Today, hosted by Chris Bath and Lehmo, averaged 416,000 viewers with a 10.3 per cent share, and Australian Story ’s Invictus special attracted an audience of 668,000 viewers ;

  • The Closing Ceremony drew an average audience of 579,000 and was #1 in its timeslot against Seven (Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix), Nine (Hey Mate – A Concert for the Farmers) and Ten (Ambulance Australia/NCIS: New Orleans);

  • Across the period, the Invictus Games live streams generated a total of 119,000 plays ;

  • ABC News articles published last week generated 820,000-page views , with a total of 1.6 million-page views for related articles in October to date.

I think I saw this program make the Top 20 each night (or almost)? I guess a good timeslot too.

The 2020 Invictus Games (pushed back by two years due to COVID pandemic) will be held in The Hague in Netherlands on April 16-22. ABC TV will have half-hour highlights of previous day’s action on late nights from Easter Monday, April 18. Broadcast times each night can be found in the schedule below.

Interestingly, ABC is not covering the opening ceremony, which will be attended by Prince Harry and Meghan.

Don’t know about that. All I know is that the Australian rights holder the ABC aren’t showing it.

According to ABC Sport’s Facebook page, there will also be highlights on iView during the Invictus Games throughout this week. This presumably include videos from the opening ceremony which will be held today at 6.30pm Dutch time (2.30am AEST Sunday).

This year’s Invictus Games will be held at Dusseldorf, Germany, from September 9 to 16.
