Maybe it’s just ACE, SCA and Nine that may have dropped pre-roll ads? Nova and ARN are still persisting by the sounds of it.

I still get pre-stream ads on Smooth FM. The pre-stream ads are a big selling point for using Triton Digital as opposed to just a Shoutcast or Icecast server which was what the broadcasters originally used. Triton provide the broadcasters with a content delivery network(CDN) and most radio automation software supports a Triton plug-in that connects to Triton via the broadcasters firewall. It’s basically an outsourced streaming service. The broadcasters can turn off the pre-stream ads via the Triton management console as well. With the kind of wages broadcasters pay nowadays it’s hard to imagine they would have much in house streaming expertise left.

There is just a couple of weeks to go before submissions close on the government’s proposals paper about Radio Prominence on Smart Speakers.
Last year the government examined prominence for free to air Australian TV Networks, resulting in a range of requirements for smart TVs and other devices to ensure access to broadcast TV is at the front of the TV menu, not buried behind other apps and options on the home screen. The new requirements are now enshrined in the Prominence and Anti-siphoning Act 2024.
Radio was not included in that legislation, but is now likely to get its own prominence legislation to guarantee Australian free to air broadcast radio remains easy to find and access on smart speakers.
The Department of Communications is inviting written comments and submissions on the consultation paper by Monday, 11 November 2024. The last few pages of the paper contain a number of very specific operational questions that the Department would like feedback on. It is well worth reading right to the end to be able to give the kind of feedback required.

I don’t think the CBAA app is available on Amazon Echo (Alexa). You have to use the ad-laden TuneIn for many community stations. Thankfully a good proportion are on iHeart as well; it doesn’t have ghastly pre roll ads. What gets my goat is that I paid for TuneIn Pro many years ago…I don’t get preroll ads when listening direct on the smartphone.

CBAA and RadioApp are both missing from Apple HomePods. Only Australian stations on Tunein or iHeart are easy to get to.

There definitely needs to be some sort of homogeneity in radio offerings between smart devices.

Getting music to play via Siri and Apple music is a pain on the homepods, good luck getting anything else

Looks like there’s an issue with streaming on some Google Nest devices. Apparently a firmware rollout has broken AAC streams.

With the BBC World Service, my Alexa connects to a rebroadcast from Vermont Public Radio rather than the native BBC stream for some reason. I can get a higher bitrate direct stream via TuneIn when using the phone. The TuneIn functionality via Alexa isn’t great.

Can confirm my Google is playing my stations that mp3 stream. Everything else is dead. Guess I might be buying an Alexa soon.

I’ve been using some of these streams on an iOS/Carplay app called Broadcasts.

I’ve been listening to some of them on a Wintal DAB24C. The device uses a service called Skytune to access internet radio stations. I have to add the streaming and icon URLs to Skytune under the “My Favourites” section.
