International Sports Rights

I’m kinda surprised - the ROW rights would be much more valuable than the UK to Apple where there are so many restrictions. Of course you’d need the overseas rights deals all to end and align at once but an Apple worldwide deal could have worked well.

With global interest in the Hungry Jack’s National Basketball League (NBL) at an all-time high, a new deal has been struck with ESPN to air all games exclusively LIVE into the United States.

The entire 2023/24 season will be carried on ESPN3 and the ESPN App in a landmark deal for the League and provides further proof the NBL is the best league in the world outside of the NBA.

Great news for NBL. Before today’s deal, the only way for Americans to watch the NBL was via its YouTube channel (also applies to countries which don’t have a current broadcast deal with the league).

Great for the NBL to get such a larger reach over there. Didn’t realise that ESPN US were still adding content to ESPN3, would’ve thought they would be pushing all their streaming exclusive content to ESPN+.

NASCAR has done a new 7-year TV deal for the Cup Series in the States starting in 2025 worth $1.1 billion (US) a season involving 4 broadcast partners.

They’d previously done a deal with The CW for Xfinity Series (second tier)

https://www.nascar.com/news-media/2023/11/29/nascar-announces-historic-media-rights-agreements-with-fox-nbc-amazon-and-warner-bros-discovery/

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — NASCAR announced it has reached new seven-year media rights agreements for the NASCAR Cup Series with four best-in-class distribution partners — FOX Sports, NBC Sports, Amazon’s Prime Video and TNT Sports, a division of Warner Bros. Discovery — to deliver live coverage of all 38 NASCAR Cup Series races beginning in 2025 and extending through the 2031 season. Financial terms of these agreements were not disclosed.

FOX Sports and NBC Sports will continue to carry the majority of NASCAR Cup Series races with 14 events each. The FOX Sports portion of the Cup Series schedule, which kicks off the season with The Busch Light Clash followed by “The Great American Race,” The DAYTONA 500, will also include live events for the entire NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series season. NBC Sports’ coverage of the Cup Series will encompass the final 14 events of the season, including the Playoffs and Championship race. Both partners will feature a mix of broadcast and cable events, with five Cup events airing on FOX and four on NBC annually. The remaining events will air on FS1 and USA Network, respectively.

As part of this historic agreement, the NASCAR Cup Series will welcome two new broadcast partners in 2025 — Prime Video and TNT Sports — that will evenly split a series of 10 midseason races. Both have also obtained exclusive rights to practice and qualifying sessions for the entire Cup Series schedule through 2031. NASCAR’s first fully direct-to-consumer partner, Prime Video will stream practice and qualifying live for the first half of the season through their last race of the midseason series with the exceptions of the Busch Light Clash, DAYTONA 500 and NASCAR All-Star Race, which will remain with FOX Sports. TNT Sports will initiate its coverage with the next five midseason races simultaneously broadcast live on TNT and streaming on the B/R Sports Add-On on Max. Practice and qualifying for the remainder of the season will stream on Max and air on truTV.

Hong Kong has finally figured out who would be airing the Games: Like Tokyo 3 years ago, the government has bought the rights to both the Olympics and Paralympics, distributing them to the city’s commercial and public broadcasters.

It is definitely an interesting battle to watch. At this stage, the NBA is targeting three national packages. ESPN/ABC look to have secured the main package, continuing to have exclusive rights to the Finals, but less games overall than they currently have. Amazon appears to have the secondary package that potentially includes conference finals (similar to what WBD have at the moment).

That leaves the final package in a two-horse race between WBD and NBC. The big question would be if NBC secures the package and WBD misses out, what would happen with the Inside the NBA crew.

From what I read, ESPN/ABC has a framework in place for the ‘A’ package (with reduced games than their current deal), Amazons has a framework in place for the ‘C’ package.

NBC/Peacock & TNT are fighting for the ‘B’ package which in the current deal is held by TNT. As with ‘A’ the new ‘B’ is also reduced games compared to current deal

ESPN bid 2.6billion for the A package and it’s reported that NBC has bid 2.5billion for the B package. TNT does have matching ability
