No, these are the new graphics for the new season. From the season opener overnight:

Burnley substitute Anass Zaroury (#19) was shown a red card after VAR review, for clipping Manchester City’s Kyle Walker.

That’s a horrible score bug. Last seasons one was much better. No need for doubling the size of the score, it looks weird.

They look a bit video gameish, which is funny given that’s where they seemingly first got sighted, but I think they’re ok. Don’t mind the oversized score actually - if you’re tuning into a game that’s the first thing you want to see, but I can see why it might be an annoyance.

They would be better if the Premier League logo was either smaller or put somewhere other than between the scores. Just makes it look too cluttered, particularly if you only have a quick glance.

I think the new Premier League graphics are simply too big. The previous set was perfectly fine.

The graphics might look decent on a small device now

It reminds me of the World Rugby scorebug.

La Liga has also new video game-style graphics for the new season. They coincide with a new global brand identity and a new sponsorship deal with EA Sports covering both Primera and Segunda División (LaLiga Hypermotion V). Alongside a new brand track (replacing the previous anthem by Lucas Vidal), the world feed opener uses Blur’s “Song 2”. Additional enhancements include stop-motion style statical graphics, more AR graphics and a Megalodon camera during selected shots.

A full video montage of the new graphics can be seen here.

As told previously, it is part of a major rebranding of LaLiga and a major repositioning of its consumer product and business strategy, dropping the multi-colored symbol in favour of a “coral red” thunderbolt design, plus the launch of additional brand verticals, including a deal with Netflix to produce a “Drive to Survive”-style original series.

On the subject of new football graphics, TNT Sports (formerly BT Sport) unveiled their new look in their coverage of the Premier League this weekend:

The new graphics were designed by DixonBaxi, with F37 providing custom fonts.

Here’s the full project page.

Staying with TNT Sports, the first glimpse of the graphics came during the UCL pre-season qualifiers, plus the Spence Jr. v Crawford bout, whose qualifiers aired on TNT Sports 1, but the main bout aired only on PPV (TNT Sports Box Office). Pictures sourced from Pres Café.

As expected, the Eurosport Cube (at White Light Studios) is getting some use, as shown from the Spence Jr. v Crawford alternative pre-fight transmission:

At Stockley Park, two virtual studios are being also built for a diversity of football and multi-sport coverage; another one is also being built at Eurosport’s main office in Chiswick Park. We should see by the end of August, when the UEFA Champions League group stage begins, one of the virtual set designs to be employed by the broadcaster.

Now to the BBC, where its football coverage has a new virtual set design, done (as with recent BBC virtual sets) by Toby Kalitowski and Lightwell’s Jim Mann.

Additionally, their legendary Match of the Day highlights show has a new opener, very inspired by social media and video games too. Some things must remain too, as the legendary Barry Stoller theme has survived once another season:

Sky Sports has a brand new state-of-the-art studio which looks really impressive. It was a fully in-house commitment which involved AR, VR, XR and physical elements. It will be used for its Premier League Monday Night Football broadcasts, plus US Open tennis.

That’s a shockingly bad virtual studio.

The PL world feed score bug has been tweaked and reduced in sizing, but still the same design.

NBC have unveiled their new college football graphics, replacing the graphic set which first began to be used on Sunday Night Football back in 2015. The new graphics are a modified version of the SNF graphics unveiled at Super Bowl LVI. NBC will be covering Big Ten games starting this year in addition to their long-running coverage of Notre Dame home games.

As for Big Ten coverage, they are going all in: they are treating each game like NBC likes to do, the Sunday Night Football and Olympic style, including lots of cross-promotion with these properties, as well as NASCAR, Triple Crown horse racing and even Premier League coverage. The afternoon games will air exclusively on Peacock, with the marquee game (the Saturday Night one) being aired on NBC, under the Big Saturday Night brand, and featuring alt-rock band Fall Out Boy as their equivalent of Carrie Underwood and “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night”. Maria Taylor will serve as presenter, and they are installing a traveling set which will be built near each campus’ stadium.

Other afternoon games will air on CBS and Fox: CBS will air a mid-afternoon game on Saturday and a midday fixture on Sunday, plus a Black Friday matchup; all will stream on Paramount+ US. For their coverage, CBS is going the traditional way, retaining most of the team and style of their long-running SEC coverage (which is moving in a exclusive basis to ESPN and ABC from next season), including their legendary theme music from Lloyd Landesman, a move which generated strong reactions, given their iconic status and its longstanding relationship with the SEC.

As for Fox, the network will air the Thursday night matchup, with other matches airing on its own Fox Sports networks (FS1 and the Big Ten Network). Additionally, each network will alternate from now in airing the Big Ten Championship game (long exclusive to Fox). NBC will air this season’s event, with CBS and Fox following in 2025 and 2026.

The move doesn’t cover exclusively football, but also basketball: Fox and Peacock will ramp up the number of matchups covered, with Fox airing 200+ matches per season, and Peacock streaming a mixed package of 47 men’s and 30 women’s basketball matches. CBS will expand their existing Big Ten rights by adding more regular season games and airing the Finals (both men’s and women’s) in an exclusive basis, airing on CBS, CBS Sports Network and Paramount+.

Both Fox and NBC are also committing to air Olympic sports: Fox is relying on its own Big Ten Network for extra sports coverage, whilst NBC is streaming their portion of the cake on Peacock (and strongly associating it with its Olympics coverage).

There are some elements that I don’t mind about it, but overall that is a bad design and way too big. It’s amazing how quickly Fox have moved away from their sleek and compact unified look they introduced in 2017 to having big and overcomplicated graphics across many of their sports.

I liked the Fox flat look. It wasn’t distracting and was just the right size. Shame it only lasted a few years.
