Are they taking the current set?

Wouldn’t that be good.

I would say so. It can be easily dismantled and trucked up.

Was there any mention on todays show that this was the last Melbourne show?

The program commissioned Australian Financial Review’s David Rowe to create a special cartoon to pay special tribute to two team members not making the move to Canberra – director Goran Nilsson and director’s assistant Dani Stout.

Insiders moves to Canberra, expanded role for David Speers

ABC national political flagship program Insiders starts a new chapter this weekend with anchor David Speers presenting the first program from its new base in the nation’s capital.

This Sunday’s episode will be the first from the recently upgraded ABC Canberra studio after a huge logistical effort over the past two weeks.

In addition to his Insiders hosting duties, the ABC has asked Speers to take on an expanded role in our federal political coverage and within the ABC’s Canberra Parliament House bureau as ABC News’ National Political Lead.

“It’s terrific to have the program that’s all about the nation’s politics now based right in the centre of the action,” Speers said.

“As Australians wrestle with hugely important issues around the cost of living, housing, climate change, the Indigenous Voice, and many others, the Insiders team will be on the ground to help them navigate how the policies and politics are impacting the nation and people’s lives.

“I’m also really pleased to have an expanded presence within the bureau. The ABC Parliament House team is a powerhouse of incredibly talented and dedicated journalists. It’s a privilege to be part of this team and I look forward to working even more closely with everyone.”

ABC Director, News Justin Stevens said Speers would have a bigger presence in ABC News’ political coverage across all platforms throughout the week, alongside 7.30 Chief Political Correspondent Laura Tingle.

“David Speers is a hugely respected political journalist and with his Insiders responsibilities now based in Canberra full-time we have the opportunity to better utilise his vast experience during the rest of the week,” he said.

“The ABC plays a vital role in scrutinising our federal policy and politicians and we plan to bring that coverage to more Australians across all ABC News services.”

This announcement is a separate initiative to the ABC’s recent proposed changes to the Canberra bureau and across ABC News, designed to increase our capacity to serve digital as well as broadcast audiences. Consultation on those proposals is continuing.

Insiders is Australia’s most-watched morning show with an average weekly total audience in 2023 of 687,000 viewers (metro, regional, ABC iview and encores/repeats).

It can be seen each Sunday at 9.00am (AEST) on ABC TV and the ABC NEWS channel, which is also available on ABC iview, and heard from 11.05am (AEST) on ABC NewsRadio, which can also be streamed via the ABC Listen app and ABC Listen online.

Sounds like a reversal of their previous decision after the backlash of removing Probyn but they’re making use of one of their highest profile talents in Speers. Looks like contract terminology caveats strike again with the use of ‘National political lead’ which is something they can get away with vs the title of ‘Editor’.

Good for Speers and their bureau but sucks for Andrew Probyn.

Yeah it allows them to cover the position unofficially while cutting wages from the payroll.

Had any of that studio (behind the camera) been used before this?

It’s great they’ve build a proper set and it’s just not screens stuck together.

Good to see beefed up production coming out of a studio other than Sydney or Melbourne.

Looks like News set has been pushed back to accommodate the cameras.

Maybe Stateline way back when, and the odd special.
