House Rules

That’s alright. Ratings prove otherwise with viewers. Let’s see how two reno episodes next week do in the ratings.

From the weekend.

Did an episode air on Tuesday - nothing up on 7Plus or elsewhere so is it not back until Sunday?

There was no episode on Tuesday.

I just caught up with these week’s episodes, and was also wondering why the judges did not appear face to face this time? If the judgment was filmed on Gold Coast, that is only a 90 minute drive down from Brisbane.
This round went down to the wire and it was the fellow teams’ score which decided the eventual result.

The original and House Rules plans.

It appears that there is an extension this time, into the garage … unless I’m reading it wrong.

Edit: Looking closer tonight, there is no extension.

Kayne and Aimee were in a no-win situation. The bathroom had to open up either to the dining room or to the entry, based on the plan posted above. Which one would you prefer?

The bathroom and bedroom 2 should have been swapped, I think, and the ensuite and WIR wardrobe swapped.

Is there anything Seven could do to improve its ratings? Obviously 500-600K isn’t as bad as MKR but surely Seven would like House Rules to be much more competitive with Masterchef and Lego/The Voice and not settle for a distant second or third?

I’d suggest that they get rid of the Block-inspired elements and return their focus to renovating other contestants’ houses, gardens and for other good causes. Remove all the forced drama and ‘zone wars’ between the contestants. Make it genuine, feel-good television rather than the fake conflicts between the contestants. Finally, if they can make their promos less generic and cookie-cutter and hype up their feel-good nature and renovations that would be great.

Of course Seven (and some people) will disagree with me but I just feel like Seven could make House Rules into a competitive show (just like Masterchef) again and it will help them to be competitive in the ratings.

To be fair for the weekly renovations they have got rid of most of the unnecessary format points which have crept in over recent years, but yes, they certainly should have started straight with the renos rather than the pointless Penthouse challenge.

Absolutely agree with axing the Zone Wars, though must admit I did like that the show was able to poke fun at itself a bit this week over that. They need more reno eps like the one we had last Sunday where it was all about what was happening and not about two minute arguments over space being stretched out over half an hour. The judging needs to go back to one episode as well IMO, with the homeowner element being at the end and focused on their genuine reactions as they see things for the first time, not a zone by zone breakdown which makes it difficult to connect with.

That said though to be honest the show has had a decent run at eight years and I’m not sure it has much more in it.

Same could’ve been said about Masterchef in the last two years but they managed to change the show and rejuvenate its ratings. The Voice was also about to collapse two years ago but last year the ratings improved. I don’t see why they can’t do the same to House Rules and get it back to 800K-900K on average.

Though I suspect some just doesn’t like House Rules whatsoever because it’s deemed a reaction to The Block’s success and it’s trashy reality on Seven.

Not for the first time I wouldn’t let the architect used to draw up the plans for House Rules anywhere near my house.

Also odd this week they’ve mentioned that Lenore has a grown up daughter still living with her but she doesn’t seem to have been catered too, with just a generic “Bedroom 2” instead and then a nursery for a visiting grandchild probably put in more for the shows needs than the houses needs. Indeed the show has suffered a bit this year by only having one family with children as the kids bedrooms are usually where they can have a bit of fun. Instead we’ve had study after study after study.

House Rules still has at least seven episodes to go (reveals of Lenore’s family home, renovation of Kimmi’s house, semi-final and grand final). There is no way HR can finish before June 7 unless Seven runs double episodes or even air on Thursday night against MasterChef and live NRL.

I suspect they’ll do what they have done in the past and air the House Rules finale after the Big Brother premiere.

Next week’s schedule has been posted. After 2-3 episodes per week for most of the season, suddenly there will be five episodes from Sunday to Wednesday including another double episode (2.5 hours) on Sunday and the show’s first Wednesday episode since week one. Tuesday and Wednesday will be part 1 and 2 of grand finals featuring the top four teams. Very erroneous programming.

Are you sure it’s the grand final on the Tuesday and Wednesday? Quite odd having 4 teams in a GF.

Here is part of next week’s schedule as posted by TVCynic. Synopses clearly state grand final.

Right okay. Strange. Maybe they hadn’t finished before restrictions took place and were forced to make this the grand final.

Kimmi’s house in Tasmania (the last to have the interior makeover) was renovated at the start of March, when COVID-19 pandemic kicked in. As Kimmi and Rhi were expected to finish in the top two, Tasmania’s border restrictions (which are still ongoing) would have meant interstate teams were not able to return later to renovate the gardens and exteriors without undergoing 14-day quarantine, thus that stage was skipped and four teams went straight to the grand final.

Understandable, but a shame too because the garden makeovers were a key part of the show.
