Home and Away

Maybe such a scene would’ve been considered to be somewhat controversial by the mainstream Australia of 15 years ago when Home & Away was just about the #1 show on TV for a while, but in 2020 I doubt most people in this country (aside from the obvious hardcore religious conservatives) would really care much about the depiction of a same sex kiss during an increasingly low rating soap opera.

I’d say the majority of the population is not concerned whatsoever. So why did Seven snip it?

You’d have to ask them.

Just incase it isn’t already obvious, I’m personally fine with same-sex relationships being depicted in Home & Away or any other soap opera on TV.

I don’t think would be the case. When The Secret Life of Us debuted in 2001 on Channel 10 there was a scene of Ritche getting a blow job by some guy in the beach bathroom. Didn’t cause a recuss then, why would it now? (Although the timeslot of the episode was at 9.30 if I remember correctly, but I could be wrong.)

I don’t think Home and Away is a good for Seven anymore, wouldn’t it be nice if it was on 10 Peach with Neighbours, at least 10 don’t give a flying fudge about gay kissing. It seems to me that Seven don’t want to cause a fuss about it, so probably chopped it off knowing if they didn’t they’d be complaints from parents, and christian/catholic religious organizations about showing it.

Who knows, only seven will know. Either way at this point they don’t seem to really care.

Really!!!

Let’s be realistic here: If it wasn’t for the networks having to meet Australian drama quotas + the fact that both shows still seem to sell well internationally, it’s likely that both Home & Away and Neighbours would’ve been axed years ago.

Oh for sure, I’m not discounting that at all.

Nobody caused a fuss during Sky Mangel’s lesbian storyline in Neighbours.

There was a bit of fuss but Neighbours spoke up well and showed how they were portraying the storyline realistically. So they were not perturbed.

They have now had a number of same sex relationships, same sex kisses and a same sex marriage. They are going to have a visit to Mardi Gras soon and have started a story line which involves a same sex couple starting a family.

and yet Home And Away is the one that wins the diversity award

:face_with_raised_eyebrow: Huh? Do we know if it was for a particular storyline or character?

Was it because they show both sides - the ocean and Pittwater?

No idea. I’m guessing nobody else submitted for nomination.

Is Home and Away G or PG-rated?

PG.

Shouldn’t even be a factor nowadays.

Neighbours do gay storylines way better than H&A. Aaron and David on Neighbours seem so natural that you’d think they were actually a couple. The Willow/Alex storyline on H&A seems clunky and a bit awkward but now that I know some of their scenes have been cut it explains why some scenes haven’t flowed properly.

Seems that the H&A producers are trying to do the right thing but the network won’t allow it, which is strange because Alex and Willow have had some quite passionate scenes which have been aired in Australia. Perhaps the network has some type of weird restriction on the amount of kissing scenes in the show?

Strange and archaic attitude from Ch7 and hopefully now that this has been brought to the attention of the public they’ll wake up and more importantly, grow up.

Quite true. As the article mentions, even shows aimed at kids like Dance Academy have had same sex storylines and kisses. A G rated show wouldn’t need to cut a same sex kiss. It’s only if it leads to an intense sex scene or involves adult themes that it may be inappropriate for a G rated show.

It’s just disappointing for Sarah and Zoe too. I can’t imagine how it feels to know your work and the chemistry you’re trying to create is cut from the final release.
