I have been compiling the histories of the topline shares for the metro markets and have managed to track ratings back to 1973 for most metros. However, I have run into a few gaps which I am hoping someone may be able to help me fill. In particular I am looking for any data from the following periods:
SYDNEY
1989 - Surveys 2 & 3
1992 - Survey 6
1997 - Surveys 2 thru 5
MELBOURNE
1997 - Survey 6
BRISBANE
1984 through 1992 - All surveys
1997 & 1998 - All surveys
ADELAIDE
1984 through 1992 - All surveys
1997 & 1998 - All surveys
PERTH
1984 through 1992 - All surveys
1997 & 1998 - All surveys
Any pre-1973 data would be greatly appreciated as well. Thank you in advance for any leads provided.
2SM would also love these sort of ratings now. In 1997 (survey 4) 2SM gained a 1.2% share. Much more relevant than its no-shows in today’s ratings
For a talk station 2UE was at the top of its game in 1992 with a 16.3% share in survey 6. 2UE’s talk competition would have been 2BL (702) and 2GB. Same three talk stations that compete today.
2GB is certainly been No.1 in Sydney for the last decade but it’s reach and power is not as strong as 2UE in the early 90s.
I get that the FM stations were always going to be weaker with the addition of two more commercial FM licences. The FM stations are no longer the money making machines that they were in the 80s and 90s.
Thank you very much. I had searched through all the SMH archives previously, yet for some reason those particular surveys hadn’t come up in my results.
The survey from 1980 shows the damage that 2WS was inflicting on 2SM before the arrival of FM radio.
If you compare Survey 3 1980 with Survey 2 2016 there are three station who now rate higher than they did 36 years ago - JJJ, 2GB and 2UW (now KIIS). And that is pretty good considering there are now 4 more commercial licences covering Sydney (2Day, The Ms, smooth and Nova).
Yes, it was rather steep. A 23.2 in Jan-Mar '78 (their last #1) down to a 14.2 a year later as 4BK started to really kick in (they moved 13.7 to 22.2 over the same span.)
And 4BK enjoyed another steep climb a decade later when it became B105. I can’t recall for certain but I think they went from 8th to 3rd to 1st over 3 surveys? Or at least it was something similar to that?
But back to 4IP didn’t they get up into the 30s earlier in the Seventies?
4BK’s last survey (1/1990) was a 11.8, the first survey as B105 (2/1990) was a 26.7 (#1)
The largest share I have recorded for 4IP was a 25.8 in Jul-Sep '77, however my data only goes back through 1974, so it is possible they topped the 30 mark prior to that.
Yes - I have Canberra from its first survey in 1976 (albeit with a few gaps in the early and mid 90s.)
Kix and 104 both debuted in the first survey of 1988. Kix with a 19.6 and 104 with a 9.5.
Canberra only had two surveys per year then, and by survey #2 of 1988, 104 had risen to a 19.4, overtaking Kix with its 16.3. 104 knocked off 2CC in Survey 2/1989, that was the first time 2CC had ever finished in any position other than first.
