I agree but our networks are simply too cheap to commit to an idea like this - any attempt made in the last 20 years indicates that it’s not even considered unless it includes advertorials or other nonsense.
Not sure about everyone else, but I personally hope that any review of “Hey Hey It’s 50 Years” by Australia’s most famous TV viewers (who for all the faults with the program they’re on, are still reasonably relevant in the current media landscape unlike Somers, Wilde, Blackman & co.) will result in the legacy of HHIS being ripped and torn to shreds.
Of course there would’ve been some product placement on Hey Hey during its final years + the 2010 series (eg, Red Faces having a sponsor) but agree with your overall point.
I’d imagine the relatively recent failures of Sunday Night Takeaway and Saturday Night Rove are also likely to ensure that Australia’s TV networks stay away from live variety on a regular basis (rather than during telethons and the like) in the near future.
I disagree. I hope this thrives and sees it renewed!
Not Hey Hey though.
Agreed, and not even that ,if Red Faces had to come back, it would seriously have to be really hammered (and monitored for stupid people) to ensure that the Blackface skit which was rightly called out for by Harry Cocky Jnr (I didn’t like the way he did it, but he called it out). What was considered funny back in the 80s has no place in today’s cancel culture.
Before I moved to the UK, didn’t Channel 7 try a format on 7HD called the NightCap, which Paul Murray was on along side Jessica Rowe, Matt White and the Zach guy from Big Brother from 2007. Lasted 3 weeks or something and Leckie’s wife complained about the joke that Zack had made on the air (live) and it was subsequently shelved and axed).
Being 36 lol, I am surprised I still quite remember that show quite clearly. Although I shouldn’t take Adam Boland’s book too seriously when he wrote that bit in his book. (Pure gossip, but that’s what he said happened)
Yes, I never actually saw that, not having digital at that time, but one I do remember was Andrew O’Keefe’s go at a late night interview series on 7HD.
Anything with Paul Murray I don’t bother looking at…
Exactly. Particularly after the controversies which made the news earlier this year over Kamahl’s treatment by the show back in the '80s, I’d imagine that a decent amount of the Australian entertainment industry do not want to be involved with a 2021/22 revived version of Hey Hey It’s Saturday under any circumstances.
Of course the Blackface sketch wasn’t acceptable by 2009 standards either. Think even as the Jackson Jive thing was going to air, I knew that it was extremely dodgy and would eventually be a story on the news, etc.
I’d imagine that if a live show had something like that nowadays, a Naughtiest Home Videos-like incident (program quickly pulled off air, replaced with alternative content to fill the remainder of the timeslot) would probably occur.
If Wikipedia can be trusted, about a month. Cancelled because separate ratings weren’t being gathered for the HD breakaway channels at the time.
Probably a fairly innovative program pre-The Project/Studio 10 though. Had The NightCap been on Seven SD/analogue, it may have lasted a bit longer…
That and Daryl saying that a show like HHIS wouldn’t work in today’s cancel culture.
No, it would see out its program out for that day. That program you provide was only pulled because KP had some standards and didn’t like that. It was a one-off. He’s long gone.
Can we expect a Hey Hey ad while the AFL grand final is on
Would think so. Saw a cricket ad before for the first time.
There you go. A date for the show. Not surprised that its on a Sunday.
Called it!
It’s just so random having a reunion show or whatever it is on a channel the program has never aired on. It just isn’t right.
I’d presume “Hey Hey It’s 50 Years” is airing on Seven because Nine didn’t want a bar of it, especially after the controversies which made the headlines earlier this year - re, Kamahl’s treatment by the show back in the 1980s.
As per previous commentary, the only thing I’m really looking forward to as a result of this special is the potential for a Gogglebox review which makes us wonder why Australia put up with HHIS for so long…
Don’t get me wrong, I know why it’s happening, it just isn’t right.
Seven obviously wanted Daryl for DWTS and he said he’d only do it if they did HHIS. I reckon it’s the only reason it’s going to be on.
I agree. This entire thing is very weird since the show has no history on the network.
