HD Broadcasting

Maybe in a weird sort of way, this is Seven’s way of trying to get out of a hole they’ve dug themselves into with HD and the AFL in Syd, Bris and Perth (by refusing or being “unable” to do native HD for AFL for FOX produced games)?

I’m sure they would like to get their main channel into HD full time up here.

I thought the reasoning for Seven only getting SD feeds for Fox Footy games was rather obvious: So people subscribe to Foxtel HD!

Other broadcasters don’t seem to have trouble getting HD Sport from FOX?

When did ABC HD start broadcasting shows in HD ?

Do any HD channels in mainland cities do anymore than stereo 2.0 Dolby Digital sound? I havent seen anything 5.1 in Tas (Win/SCTV Territory)

I think Nine HD and Ten HD do 5.1 while the others do 2.0 or stereo, but I’d have to check on that…

In Canberra SBS HD is Stereo (PCM), ABC HD, 7mate HD, 9HD and WIN TEN HD are ‘Dolby Digital’ (so I think 5.1, but my TV/decoder aren’t giving details)

I agree - 9HD and TEN HD are DD 5.1 while 7HD and ABC HD are DD 2.0 in metro areas.

In regional areas ABC HD, 7Mate, WIN HD and SC9 HD are all DD 2.0. Don’t know about NNSW for NBN or SC10.

SBS is stereo.

7 requests content submitted with DD 5.1, but accepts content that is only stereo (as long as the other channels are still present, but silent). I assume all the other commercial networks do that.

BTW, I must say, ABC HD shouldn’t be called that at the moment. Sure, they’re broadcasting in 1080i, but probably 95% of their content is SD. Even the promos and station IDs.

Still no word on when/if Prime7 will make their main channel available in HD (or when 7flix may appear)?
I’d hoped since they outsourced their playout at least 7HD would be happening soon (before the tennis really gets going).

Will we see HD in all regions of Australia in 2017 on Seven ? Probably not… can’t believe they are the only network now to have their main channel still in SD. I wonder why regional Qld isn’t getting HD at the moment.

Repeating some of what I just wrote in the Seven Tennis Coverage thread:

No ‘HD’ add-on in Canberra (where 7mate is HD).

As I like the Hopman Cup & while it’s on 7mate HD right now, I guess I don’t yet mind the lack of Prime7HD, but it’ll be bad if the main 7 channel everywhere isn’t HD by the time the AusOpen starts.

There never was and doesn’t yet need to be.

The 7mate “HD” bug was only used in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth when broadcasting 7mate on channel 70 in HD alongside 7mate on channel 73 in SD (a result of the terrible so-called ‘revival’ of metro 7HD). Before HD on channel 70 was brought back, there was no “HD” bug.

Also shown today in regional Qld apparently (there’s a post with screenshot in Seven Tennis Coverage thread), but I agree the HD add-on thing is only useful when there’s an SD simulcast of the same channel.

This is so sad

Watching 9 and not 9HD (rolls eyes)

Of course, that’s one of the things he looks forward to when he comes home, to actually sit on the couch in front of his OLED TV.

So many venues I’ve visited over the holidays are only showing the SD channels on their giant screens.

It seems it’s just too much trouble for people to learn to press two buttons instead of one when they select channels (even though Ten is obviously the exception).

And the networks need to remind people that they can watch in HD on whatever channel it is. Without educating, people will never remember or learn. And just putting “HD” on your promos doesn’t do a thing.

Networks should follow Foxtel’s lead and place the HD channel on the original number. Eg place 9HD on 9 and 9SD on 90.
